Cloud Turner Killed Culminating a quarrel of almost a year, Cloud Turner, 50, Horton farmer, was shot by his brother-in-law, Sam Roberts, and died about 20 minutes later. The shooting occurred about one mile north of Horton and about 6 miles northeast of Commerce at 8 o'clock this morning. The 2 men had a quarrel over a farm left their wives several years back. Roberts admitted to the shooting to Delta County officers who investigated the crime. In telling his part in the quarrel, he said, "We had trouble for over a year, but I tried to avoid serious trouble and went as far as I could but matters finally came to a show down." The shooting occurred in front of the Roberts' home. The two were quarreling and Roberts reached inside the front door where he had left a shotgun. Turner began running down the road but had gone only 20 feet when he was struck in the back by buckshot with which the gun was loaded. Turner staggered on for about 30 feet more before falling to the ground on his face. An unopened knife was found tightly clasped in his hand. J.H. and Haskell Fox were the only 2 witnesses to the shooting and they were about 300 yards away; they were unable to give details of what happened. Sheriff C.F. Patterson and Deputy Sheriff L.B. Carrell of Cooper held the coroner's inquest and the verdict was "death by gun shot wounds at the hands of Sam Roberts". The body was removed by Cooper undertaking company, pending funeral arrangements. Turner is survived by his wife and 2 children by a former marriage. ~ ~ ~ Commerce Journal Mr. Turner was a brother to John Turner of the Lake Fork vicinity, and up to a few years ago had made his home in Rains County, and was known to many of our readers. ~ ~ ~ The Rains County Leader, Friday, March 17, 1933 Submitted by Elaine Bay, Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 9:59 p.m.
