The Lewis Barksdale Family
Lewis Barksdale was early Texas pioneer arriving in Texas before 1833 and settling in Nacogdoches in 1838. In 1842 he married Mary Gilliland, daughter of Eli Gilliland who came to Texas with his family in 1828 as one of the "Old Three Hundred" families for the colonization of Nacogdoches.
Lewis and Eli were in the Texas army during the revolution. Lewis was in the siege of Bexar and received a land grant in the Upper Nueces Canyon near the Dixie settlement. He died in 1855, leaving the property to his children. Lewis Frank and his sisters Keziah Haney and Sarah Elizabeth settled on the property in 1869. It became known as the Barksdale ranch,
