Nellie Mae Ballard
September 21, 1937 - September 13, 2014
Nellie Mae Hilton Ballard was born September 21, 1937 in Jayton, TX. She
began elementary school at the old Antelope School and later went to Girard when
the schools consolidated. When she was a freshman her parents then moved
to Jayton and Nell graduated high school there in 1956.
Nell attended nursing school in Lubbock, TX and shortly after met and married
Billy Ray Ballard in Spur on September 6, 1957. After raising her family
on the family farm in Girarad, she moved to Winters to work for Winters
Independent School District. After her retirement as school cafeteria
manager in 2006, Nell moved to Bronte to be closer to her family. Nell
depended on the Lord to take care of her and her family all the time. She
was a wife mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend and loved them all with
all her heart. Nell's family was most important to her-they were her
hobby!
She was a farmer, a nurse and made the best food for the school
children in the cafeteria. Nell loved to go, just to be going
somewhere! Never spent a lot of money on herself, just if her kids
needed something. Her best times were traveling with her kids -
Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, horse races in New Mexico and
Walmarts all over. Visiting with her friends and talking on the
phone was what she loved to do. Nell liked to know everything - she
read the newspaper every day, and would tell you about politics and
her opinions whether you wanted to hear it or not.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents Amos and Ollie Hilton, her
brothers Lewie and Ed Hilton, former husband Billy Ray Ballard and
one grandchild Reagin Danielle Smith.
She leaves behind her loved ones who will meet her in heaven:
Daughters Kathy Ward and Benny of San Angelo, and Lisa Dyess of
Bronte and one son Bill Ballard of Girard and Lubbock. Her
grandchildren: Brooke Smith; Clayton and Tanya Smith of San Angelo,
Blanie and Savannah Dyess of Shamrock and Bronte, Allison and Alan
Kierman of Scottsdale, Arizona; and step-grandson Drew Ward and
Julia of Dallas. Great grandchildren are: William Smith, Bond and
Felicity Kierman, and step great-grandson Logan Ward. Brother and
sisters-in-law are: Cracker and Lois Ann Ballard, Mattie Hilton, and
Sallie Sparks. Her nieces and nephews; Sandra Paschal, Patsy Le
Fevere, Donna Drennon, Bob, Don and Jim Ballard, Lanny, Rob and Ron
Ballard, Stacie Burchett, Tina Lytle, Anya Mullins, John and Charles
Hilton and each of their families. So many great nieces, nephews and
cousins whom she loved and thought of often.
Nellie passed from this life on September 13, 2014 in San Angelo.
