The Bartley Journal
Written by Nancy Elizabeth (Bettie) Neill Bartley,
1906 - 1912
Transcribed from the original book by Sheryl Sutphen
For the Eager Reunion, 2005
Bettie Bartley’s journal was written in a record book with the name Ross J.
written on the front. The
original Ross content was in ink; Bettie’s entries are written in pencil,
sometimes directly over the original
entries. Notes with the original Ross entries are included in italics. The
journal has been transcribed as
exactly as possible, with misspellings and grammar errors. Words that could not
be read, were missing, or
were guesses were replaced or noted with a question mark.
Many of the pages are missing from the journal book, and some pages had been
removed and replaced
out of order. The journal starts on page 39 of the original book, and the pages
were transcribed in
chronological order.
Some of Bettie’s entries are Eureka Dots, articles she wrote for the
Breckenridge newspaper about events
in Eureka, the community they lived in. She seems to have been a prolific
writer, as other Eureka Dots
articles and diary notes were written on loose notepad sheets and in other small
note pads that were often
found in boxes with family photos. These may be transcribed in a second volume.
Eureka is on FM 1853 between Breckenridge and Moran in Stephens County, Texas.
Several family
members are buried in nearby Battle Creek Cemetery, on County Road 196.
The original journal has been archived in a document box with acid-free
interleaving tissue to keep it
intact for future generations of Eagers.
