From "The Descendants of James and Joseph McCleskey, Soldiers of the Revolution: The Texas Group," by Charles S. McCleskey, 1978, an autobiographical sketch by James Benson McCleskey, describes his life. From p 113 (not dated):

I was born in Hall County, Georgia, on the Oconee River, five miles east of Gainesville.

I don't know much about my first wife's people outside her father's family. Her father's name was James Nixon and her mother's name was Mary Nixon. They had born to them seven boys and two girls. James, and Hiram. The girls were Jane and Mary. I married the youngest child, Jane, in 1857. To us were born six children, three boys and three girls. Two of the boys died when small, William Abner and Robert Lee. Hiram, the oldest of the boys, died when he was 41 years old in Eastland County, Texas. The girls are all alive at this writing, as far as I know. Their names are Anna, Decater, and Ida. I am now living with my second wife. We were married in Bastrop Cty on the 12th day of December, A. D., 1871 at her father's, J. L. Freeman. To us were born seven children, four boys and three girls. Three boys died when small. One is still living, Fred A. McClesky. The girls are all alive: Leona Veatrus Jennings living in Coleman, Texas; Rebecca May Tolle living at Gunsight, and Willie Maud Broyles living at New Castle, Texas.
