Ben R. Grant, Retired County Clerk, Buried
 
                Funeral services were to be held at 2:30 p.m. today for Ben R. Grant, 86, one of Stephens County’s best known citizens. Mr. Grant, who held elected office here for 46 years, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in Stephens Memorial Hospital.
                Services were to be held at First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Thomas, pastor, officiating and Rev. John Taylor, pastor of First Methodist Church, assisting. Burial was to be in Breckenridge Cemetery under direction of Melton Funeral Home. Offices in the courthouse were to close from 2 to 4 p.m. in memory of Mr. Grant.
                Mr. Grant had been in ill health for several months and had been a patient at the hospital since Feb. 28.
                Born May 22, 1881 in Cornella, Ga., he came to Stephens County in 1896, living at Lacasa. His first wife, Edith Simmons, died in 1902 and he was marred to Etta Downing June 9, 1907.
                He attended Hawkins Normal College in Gorman and Daniel Baker College in Brownwood. For 12 years before moving to Breckenridge in 1916 he taught school. After moving here he served as deputy sheriff and jailer for two years and was elected tax assessor-collector in 1918.
                Mr. Grant continued to serve as tax assessor until 1922 when he was elected county clerk. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1963. In all Mr. Grant served for 46 years as a public official, making 23 successful political races.
                He was one of 11 brothers and sisters and the son of a farmer who was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War.
                He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Roughneck Bible Class and had been active in the chamber of commerce and the county historical society.
                Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. V.L. (Arlene) Harvey of Breckenridge and Mrs. Robert (Edith) Phifer of Fort Worth; two sons, F.P. of Richardson and Dr. O.A. of Tarleton State College; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. B.O. Grant of Abilene; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
                Pallbearers were Ed Pace, Homer Martin, John Watson and Robert OBrien, all of Breckenridge, Darrell Powers of Abilene and Dr. Dick Smith of Stephenville.
