Originally called the Burial Grounds, the first
burial was Ira Merrill, who lost his life in the Indian skirmish
of July 23, 1860. In 1897, a city ordinance declared the burial
site to be the Smithfield Cemetery. Many graves in the "old
cemetery" are unmarked, including those of five Indians. For
years, two sisters--Julia Collett
Cantwell and Matilda
Collett Merrill--
placed flowers on these graves. In 1925,
they approached Mayor John P. Toolson with a proposal that a
monument be erected to honor the Indians. The women solicited
donations and, with the assistance
of the City, purchased a
red sandstone monument on which was inscribed: "To
honor our
Lamanite friends who were active in the early settlement of our
city." |
