TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES:

TOTALS - Families – 41; People – 195; U.S. citizens over 21 – fourteen.

The deputy or assistant marshals who took the census were provided with detailed written instructions covering the various elements of the census along with the directive that it be performed with "absolute accuracy. It was mandatory to have entries for each person listed in columns #1 through #7 and #10. The instructions further stated: "The inquiries in columns numbered 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19,and 20 are of such a nature that these columns only require to be filled when the answer to the inquiry is ‘Yes’." In these columns where appropriate the enumerator indicated "Yes" with a vertical slash [/]. In addition the directives stated that no report of personal property would be made if under $100.

The census-taker enrolled all of Clarkston on August 11th and went to Newton where on the same day he started the census of Newton which he finished on August 12th.

Some aspects on the 1870 Newton census:

1). Probable mistakes
Family #17 – Myler, Joseph . . .occupation "At home" should have been "Farmer."
Family #32 the listing is distinctly written "Sharp, William" age 24 with his wife "Bethia" age 19 with no children, but should have been William Sparks.
The reasons for this judgment are as follows: no "Sharps" has been found in the old records of Newton kept by the Church, school and other primary sources. However, there was a William Sparks with wife Bethea with no children and at the same ages as the couple listed on the census who were living in Clarkston where on Jan. 9, 1870 a baby girl was born and died the same day. His older brother George was also in Clarkston. When the census was taken in August there was no William Sparks listed in either Clarkston or Newton, and only Sparks listed at Clarkston being George’s family. Apparently William and his wife moved to Newton in accordance with the planned relocation of the entire Clarkston settlement to the new site at Newton before the census was taken. However, after President Young decided to let both settlement to continue the William Sparks family soon moved back to Clarkston where a child was born in March of 1871.

On the children less than a year old, the fraction of a year and the birth month listed don’t add up.

It will be noted that the census-taker made no notation of any youngster "At school" as he had at Clarkston, but did list one "School Teacher" [#27].

2). Names – The handwritten records can be difficult to decipher and this along with the enumerator’s spelling, some extraordinary flourishes in his script and the interpretation thereof could result in a scrambling of some names. This enumerator had a strong tendency to write Danish names that ended with "sen" by listing them as "son." All of the Danish names, except Benson, should have had the "sen" ending. The Benson family had changed their name from "Bendtsen" to Benson. Several of the names are slightly different from the form used today.

In the late 1870s Bishop William Littlewood changed his surname to Rigby. At least some of the "Clark" names should have been "Clarke," "Suter" should have been "Seiter," "Loosli" should have been "Loosle" and the "Eckerman" under family #30 probably should have been "Aeschilman."

Due to the circumstances at Clarkston and Newton at the time of the 1870 census, both must be checked before determining where individuals were at the taking of the census. Shortly after the August census of 1870 several families at Newton moved back to their old community of Clarkston (the Godfreys, Keeps, Goodys, Mylers, Larsens, Sparks, and probably Cyrus Clark), and it became and remained the larger community for several decades.
