Totals — Census enumerator cited 79 occupied dwellings with 76 families, but because of polygamous families and the enumerator apparently losing track of his counting, both the dwellings and families could be questioned. The total number of persons enrolled in this census was 464 — listed on the original rolls with nine pages containing fifty names each and the tenth page containing fourteen names.
Mistakes, omissions and other aspects of this census:
1). Under Family #9 – Thompson the nativity of the two children was turned around with the father born in
England and the mother in Utah. It should have been cited as “Utah,England,Utah” for both children.2). Family #10 – on first son Alfred no indication of his being single or married.
3). Family #20 – Ema was marked as married but not listed as a wife.
4). Family #24 on Mary Godfrey and Family #26 for Ellen Atkinson the enumerator placed a “D” in Col. #12, that should have been in Col.#11. Col.#12 was for person married during the census year and Col.#11 for person widowed or divorced. Family #50 had the “D” placed correctly. Family #26 – on the younger William Col. #13 entry was scratched out but appears to be “Farmer.”
5). Family #28 – Angelina was marked as 4-years-old and in the next column another “4” was recorded, but
this column (#7 “If born within the Census year, give the month.”) called for an entry only if applicable.6). Under Family #30 – possibly the Joseph Thompson family was mistakenly listed with the Sayer family.
7). Enumerator numbering became somewhat confusing beginning after Dwelling #43, Family #43, the next
entry was for a plural wife which he listed as D. #44, F. #43 for Johannah Dale; the next entry was D. #45,
F. #44 for Thos. Griffin [should have been Theophenia Griffith] followed by the entries for D.#45, F.#45
for Caroline Thompson. The number could be correct provided that Theophenia Griffith and Caroline
Thompson families lived together in Dwelling #45.Thereafter his consecutive numbers returned to a pattern
wherein the Dwelling and Family numbers were the same until Family #55 where another plural wife
caused the numbering of Dwellings and Families to be different to D.#60 F.#60. The dwelling and family
numbering remained the same to D.#65 F.#64 and remained off through the remainder of the census.8). Family #47 – possible confusion over the relationships between head of family Mary Griffin and Eliza T.
because no relationship listed. Probably next four youngsters’ relationship is to Eliza T. and not the head
of the family.9). Under Family #55 – the “William Reel” should be William Reed, the son of Jane from an earlier marriage.
10). Under Dwelling #59 Family #58 – Charles Shumway, the enumerator incorrectly marked four-year-old
Agnes as “wife” and then marked her as single.11). Under Dwelling #68 Family #67 – the enumerator placed a four-year-old Sarah Goodey as head of the
household whereas she belonged to the family in the previous dwelling. John E. Godfrey should have been
listed as the head of this household.12). Dwelling #70 Family #69 – no listing of “keeping house” for Emely the second wife, and seven-year-old
Emely J. was mistakenly marked as single and married.13). In the long listing for Dwelling #70 Family #69, the enumerator probably missed marking the Henry M.
Harmond (Harmon) family as separate from the Bassett family.14). Under Dwelling #73 Family #72 – only the letter “W” was used to indicate wife and for servant, Eva R.
Rice, no listing of the nativity of her parents.15). Dwelling #78 Family#76 – the ten-year old Jennett should not have been listed as head of household but
her mother Agnes on the line above.16). There were three young ladies from Providence working in Clarkston. They were the daughters of Orson
and Jane Rice. Their father had at least one other plural wife and many children. Two are found in
Dwelling #4 Family #4 as Clara Jane Rice age 18 working as a school teacher and Alice Rice age 20 also
engaged as a school teacher. The third was at Dwelling #73 Family #72 listed as a servant. The census
taken at Providence on the same day as the one at Clarkston listed the girls in their parents’ family—Alice
M. Rice age 20 as a “School teachers, Clara J. Rice at age 18 as a “School teacher” and Eva Rice at age 15
Engaged in “House work.”17). Uncertain if the last name on the census listing “Datus R. Hammond” was boarding with the Archibald
family he was listed under, or whether the enumerator made this last entry and did not include the
necessary details. Datus R.’s father was Milton Datus Hammond,one of the most important and influential
men in Cache County who had one of his polygamous families living in Clarkston at this time.Names:
1). Family #40 – Mary Hilman (Hillman) the first two children were from her first husband, Ira King Hillman,
who died in 1865, and the last two children were from a second husband, Russell King Homer. Apparently
she retained her original married name, being the plural wife of Homer due to the mounting prosecution of
polygamy.2). Family #43 – Dale should have been Dahle.
3). Dwelling #45 Family #44 – the “Thos. Griffin” should have been Theophenia Griffith, a female with
three children. It is helpful to check the 1870 census.4). Dwelling #66 Family #65 – Maris Gover, the given name should have been Morris or Maurice.
5). On the spelling of other surnames — Goodey families should have been Goody; Butters should have been
Buttars; Shomway should have been Shumway; Rasmusen should have been Rasmussen; Hilman should
have been Hillman; Loosly should have been Loosle; the Harmond families should have been Harmon.6). The “Daniel Castly” boarding with the Henry M. Harmond family probably was Dan Costly who later
became noted in Cache Valley for trading, buying and selling animals.7). Family #64 – A.W. Thompsen was Scandinavian and not related to the English Thompsons.
8). There was various spellings of given names and only a few examples will be cited. Elizabeth was also
spelled Elisabth, Ema used instead of Emma, Emely in most cases instead of Emily, one “Estor,” etc.Plural families:
Families #31 and #40 – Russell King Homer had a wife at his residence and also a second wife at a second dwelling using the name Mrs. Mary Hilman.Family #33 – Johanes Dahle had two wives
Family #38 – W.C. Judd with wife Rosalia and his newly married second wife still using her maiden name, Mary Ann Harris.
Family #55 – James Archibald had two wives.
Family #61– Lars Rasmussen had two wives.
Family #64 – A. W. Thompsen had two wives.
Family #69 – Edwin Bassett had two wives.
Family #69 – Henry M. Harmond had two wives.
Family #72 – Kjesten Hammond in Dwelling #73 was the plural wife of Milton Datus Hammond from Providence who maintained one of his families at Clarkston. The Clarkston listing of children involved at least two different wives.
Family #76 – William Archibald had three wives.
