Welcome to Lincoln County WisconsinThis site is under construction, stop by often to see the updates. My name is Sharon Karow and I am your host. This site is part of the WIGenWeb project, which is part of the larger USGenWeb project. The purpose of this site is to provide free information useful in researching the genealogies and histories of families that have lived in Lincoln County.. Included is information on sources, libraries and archives, and, whenever possible, online indexes and transcriptions of source material or scans of original documents. If you have an interest in contributing material to this site contact me by email. Enjoy your visit! Permanent white settlement of this region did not begin until after the War of 1812, when the U.S. secured control of this region. Those early settlers were engaged in either fur trading or lumbering. Lincoln County was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1874 and celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 1999. It had been part of Marathon County. In the beginning, it included most of current Oneida and Vilas Counties, as well as parts of Langlade, Taylor, Price and Iron, and was incorporated in 1881. Present day Lincoln County is bordered by Oneida County on the north and Price County and Taylor County on the west. The southern border of Lincoln County joins Marathon County and on the east LangladeCounty If you use FreeFind to search this site be sure to also search on all the neighboring counties NEW pages, resources and updates on this site. The USGenWeb Project began in the spring of 1996 with a group of genealogists in Kentucky with an interest in providing free genealogical data to the public The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties, where collected databases would be stored. In addition to collecting these databases, other resources were to be made available including information on genealogical societies, posted queries, maps, and other aids. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web sites. The concept quickly spread from Kentucky to other states and within a few months, the USGenWeb Project was born.
WIGenWeb has a state-level site maintained by State Coordinator Tina Vickery and Assistant State Coordinator Marcia Ann Kuehl. Likewise, each county has a coordinator who is responsible for providing assistance and maintaining a website of information for that specific county. Some counties are available for adoption, and assistance is always needed in transcribing, locating, and preparing data for the WIGENWEB Archives. If you'd like to volunteer to assist in the WIGENWEB project, or you are a new volunteer, please contact the state coordinator. |
