Pleasant Grove Baptist Church PLEASANT GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH ESTABLISHED 9 APRIL 1859 written and contributed by Sharon Morrow Tomback The Church was established by thirteen hearty souls representing six families from the area surrounding the Halls’ Mills and Elmira Communities near Hamilton: the Gaskins, Morrow, Hulsey, Johnson, Cantrell and Dunn families. They agreed “... to build a suitable House for Church purposes at or near the seven mile post on the Hackleburg Road.” We do not presently know when the first “House for Church purposes” was built. But, in 1903 a new wood frame church building was constructed; it was painted white. It stood facing east where the present parking area exists west of the building. A new brick building facing south was erected by members deeding one acre of production for two years in 1958 and 1959. Robert Adkins and A.L. Dugin, Ministers of the Gospel, “...being convened at the School House near D.C. Morrow’s in the County of Marion, and State of Alabama.” ... constituted the following persons into a Church known as Pleasant Grove.: (males) (females) D.G. Gaskins M.E. Hulsey D.C. Morrow N.C. Hulsey H.S. Hulsey R.S. Hulsey Wm. H. Johnson Harriette Dunn James Cantrell M.H.S. Dunn J.H. Dunn T.P. Dunn Some Information on the Charter Members D.G. Gaskins was David “Dave” Gaskins and he was the first person buried at Pleasant Grove. He was born in Sumter County, Georgia, 26 March 1822 and died 20 August 1884. He served in the Confederate Army, Co. G, 4th Georgia Cavalry. This first burying occurred when Ed Owens was a little boy in school at the old log schoolhouse. The teacher combed their hair and had them all stand in a respectful line as the funeral went past. D.C. and Juliann Morrow were David Chislome and Julia Ann Pope Morrow. William H. Johnson received a Certificate of Entry 1 March 1845 for land in Marion County. James Y. Cantrell, born 1842 in Tennessee, was the son of John M. and Clarissa Cantrell; he married (1) Sarah and (2) Ophelia, daughters of D.C. and Julia Ann Pope Morrow. H.S. and Mary E. Hulsey were the parents of Rebecca K.S., and Nancy Catherine Hulsey. Nancy Catherine married Thomas Jefferson Hall, son of James M. and Susannah Mills Morrow Hall of Halls’ Mills. Harriette Dunn was the wife of Henry and mother of M.H.S. Dunn (female), John H., born 1841, and Thomas P., born 1843. The Church continues to worship on Sundays. Some of the present members are descendants of the original six families. # # # # # The author is a daughter of Rufus Spears and Evelyn Ann Markham Morrow, a granddaughter of James Taylor and Mollie Jane Estes Morrow, a great, granddaughter of David Gus Davis and Zilpha Elizabeth Clay Morrow and a great, great granddaughter of David Chislome and Julia Ann Pope Morrow. She was born in Hamilton and now lives in Bedford, New York with her husband, Stephen. They have one son, Scott. She has published a book on the Morrow families of Marion County and continues to add to and share her knowledge of Morrow and other Marion County families.
