We note that Hamilton, Marion County, the same county where the recent gas well was brought in, is a new Alabama center for "quickie" divorces. The record shows 185 divorces granted in 1955 and 658 in 1956 in Hamilton. Most of them were for non-residents. Somebody may be getting rich from that kind of nefarious traffic but Alabama is badly in need of some corrective legislation. Athens and Huntsville had their day in the quick divorce sun but an outraged public sentiment put a stop to it. Now a more obscure spot such as Hamilton has been found by outsiders. It's time to tighten up. Alabama Journal, March 30, 1957. |
