I've been trying for ages to get some info on my ancestor, William ETHERIDGE, who bought land in Sumter County on 5 Dec 1834, adjacent to a tract purchased by someone named David ETHERIDGE. I believe Davis was his brother. William died was born 17 May 1792 in "the Carolinas" and died in Sumter County on 4 June 1841. I am told he is buried in a small family plot outside Livingston, between Livingston and the Tombigbee River. I also know there are some paper at the courthouse concerning his surviving wife (Susannah Margaret WILSON) and their children. I am searching for William's father, and anything else I can manage to get. I would love to get in contact with anyone else doing research on this line. Thank you, Mark Etheridge

My name is M. Carpenter and I am doing the research for my fiancee Adolph Yarrell whose family originated in Lauderdale County, MS. Robert RADCLIFF (mullato) (DOB 1862) married Pearlie YARRELL (DOB June 21, 1866) on January 13, 1887. Robert's mother was named Rachel (mullato) and father's name unknown. Pearlie was the daughter of Simon YARRELL Sr. and Dee or Delia WOBBINGTON. They lived in Toomsuba, Ms. Pearlie attended Good Hope School. Pearlie YARRELL had 3 brothers, Charlie who married Fannie KENNEDY Simon who married Alice KENNEDY and Waughney who married Hattie. She also had 4 sisters, Lillian who married Marcellis BREWSTER Velma - never married Ida who married Willie PATTON and Francis who married Alex HALL. Robert had 3 brothers, Dan, Henry, and Charlie 1 sister Lula who married Robert LOFTON. Robert RADCLIFF and Pearlie YARRELL had 9 children, Maybell who married Mack Henry BETTS Issac who married Anna Willie who married Estell Robert, Jr. who married Maezella Simon who married Dualee Ullysses who married Margarette Ruby who married James PRINGLE Ella who married P.G. LOFTON and Eugene who married Maureen. Robert and Pearlie purchased land (presently known as "Radcliff Bottom") from J.E. SHARMAN on Feb. 15, 1896. Robert was a charter member of the HBA Funeral Home.
I received your list of information regarding Nancy Emily YARRELL. Upon further checking, I found some YARRELLs in Issaquena County, MS. The 1900 US census for Issaquena County, Beat #1, dated June 7, 1900, Enumeration Dist 30, Supv. Dist 3, Sheet # 6A, Line/Page 34 lists a Thomas YEARL (YARRELL), black male age 75 who was a boarder of C. John STANTON. It also lists a Fannie YARRELL who I think may be his wife or daughter. Thomas was born in MS and his parents were born in Martin County, VA. Fannie was born in MS and her parents were born in N. Carolina. I believe these are Adolph's great-great grandfather & grandmother. I have no idea at this time who Thomas' parents were, but I think he might be linked to Wilson YARRELL of N.Carolina. I also found a Simon YARRELL, Sr., Black male age 57 who I think is the son of Thomas YEARL (YARRELL). He is listed with a wife named Deanner? and three children, Belmar, Lillie and Simon Jr. (US Census, Lauderdale County, Beat #5, dated June 19, 1900, ED 28, Supv. Dist 3, Pg. 34, Line 78). There is also another listing for Simon, Sr. with a wife named Diana and children named Pearly, Ida, Warny, Charlie, and Simon, Jr. (Lauderdale Co, Beat #5, Pg. 24) This coincides with the information we already had on the family. I think Thomas YEARL (YARRELL) is Adolph's great-great-grandfather ,Simon Sr. is his great grandfather and Simon Jr. is his grandfather. The information we obtained from family members said Simon Sr. was a "rolling stone" and had several other wives and families. Simon, Jr. was his son. Simon Jr. is the father of Adolph's father, Ernest Reese YARRELL. The 1990 US Census for Lauderdale County, Beat # 1, dated June 7, 1900 ED 30a, Sheet 16B, Line 73 lists a Warren YARRELL, black male age 24 and wife Liza and daughter Pearl. I don't know yet how he is linked. In the 1790 US Census a Thomas YARRELL and a Wilson YARRELL are mentioned. Thomas was white and Wilson was black. I don't know if Wilson was a slave of Thomas or not. I also discovered some YARRELLs in Georgia. However their name was spelled "WORRELL" but was listed under the Soundex Code of Y640 which is the code for YARRELL. I'm trying to find out more information about Rose YARRELL who married Charles CHERRY (DOB Beaufort Co. N.C.) date of death Abt 1818 in Montgomery Co., TN and had a daughter named Milly YARRELL CHERRY. Do you have any more information on Rose YARRELL? Who was her father and mother and did she live in Lauderdale County,MS? I have a marriage record for P.W. YARRELL and Mollie WINSTON (mullato) in Lauderdale Co, Ms. on Dec. 9, 1893. P.W. YARRELL was born May 22, 1845 in Lauderdale County, MS and was the son of William Franklin YARRELL. There is also a Jared S. YARRELL, Jarrad P. and Jarrad Y. YARRELL who possibly lived in Lauderdale Co. The 1850 Census for MS lists Jared YARRELL and a son Thomas F. (age 9). I can't seem to find anymore information on these people. I received an e-mail from Jeannette K. Howell (jkhowell@beaches.net) who sent me information on her ancestors, Nancy Emily YARRELL, daughter of William Franklin YARRELL (DOB 6/15/1822)and Rebecca Jane ROBERTS. They had two other children, Mary J. Virginia YARRELL and Pearce William YARRELL but I can't find out any information on them. Could they possibly be descendants of Rose YARRELL and Milly YARRELL? I'm trying to finish this research for my fiance, Adolph YARRELL (DOB 10/23/49), who is in the hospital in Wisconsin waiting on a heart transplant. He had previously found some of his relatives in MS., i.e. Simon YARRELL (DOB 7\27\1866 and DOD March 20, 1941) who married Delia WOBBINGTON in Lauderdale CO.,MS. He also had an early Name of Matthew YARRELL (1600's) but couldn't connect him with anyone.

I am interested in information relating to Samuel H. COFFMAN who came to Sumter Co. in the 1830's from Shenandoah County, VA, and m. Susan MITCHELL on >22 Oct 1836 in Sumter Co. In 1839 S.H.  COFFMAN's will is probated in Sumter Co. and Susan COFFMAN is left with one daughter, Virginia Elizabeth COFFMAN, and carrying a second child, a son, born a short time later. There are 4 folders of papers relating to Mr. COFFMAN's estate settlement in the Al Archives, and I have seen them. But I do not know where he is buried, and I am interested in his business which was under the name, DEWITT COFFMAN AND CO. He states in his will that he is "connected" in that business with Samuel COFFMAN, Erasmus COFFMAN and Dewitt COFFMAN, and I wonder if several of them were still in VA. Listed as executors of his will are James PARKER, Robert F. HOUSTON, John H. HOPKINS, and Dewitt COFFMAN. Does anyone have information on any of these above named?

I am seeking information on the parents of my gg-grandfather Pleasant CRENSHAW, born SC 1813 or 1815. His 1st wife Elizabeth was born about 1810 in GA. Because of the naming of the children I suspect Elizabeth maiden name or Pleasant's mother's maiden name to be DARVEL. I am also suspect of the names William, James, Anel, & Pleasant as possible fathers. Pleasant CRENSHAW had migrated to Neshoba County, MS by 1843, when his oldest child was born. I suspect that he was living in Alabama with relatives in 1840. I believe that he may be associated in some way with either the HOUSTON, GULLY, or CALCOAT families.

Seeking the descendants of the following HALLs and PIPPIN/ENs lines. William P. HALL,b. abt 1814, m. Rebecca C. PARKER 1836 in Sumter County, by 1850 had 3 children, Patrick H., Louisa A. & Alphonzo A HALL. By 1860 the family was in northern Choctaw County but they may have lived in the area that was annexed in 1850. William P. HALL's brother, Peleg P. HALL, b. about 1824 in Greene County, AL, was caring for his mother, Penelope, in northern Choctaw County in 1860 census and may never have moved but perhaps was in the area annexed. John P. HALL another brother of the previously mentioned group, may have been the eldest son of Robert "Clark" HALL and his wife Penelope PIPPIN. In 1842 John was elected to the position of Justice of the Peace in Sumter but gave up the position and may have moved to Mobile. James M. HALL, b. about 1832 in Greene County, in the 1850 census was living in Peleg's household, may be the J.M. HALL that married a HAMIL in Sumter after the war. Zachariah HALL, b. abt. 1833, in 1850 census was living with brother, Peleg HALL. Sarah P. HALL, b. in the late 1820s is believed to be a sister, married James E. KNOTT in 1845 in Sumter County. Rebecca HALL, b. 1815, Franklin County, NC, a known sister, married Austin HITT, no date found, have some descendant info on her. Susan HALL, b. ?, in 1849 married Daniel GRIFFIN, is believed to be one of the three sisters but this is speculation on my part since I cannot link her to the other HALL families in Sumter county. Kerney Cotton (may be Colton) HALL, b. 1818, Franklin Co., NC, married 1.)Hettie S. WALLACE in Sumter County in 1846 and 2.) Sarah E. WELLS in 1863 in Sumter Co. K.C. HALL died on his farm near Cuba, AL in 1874. KC's is my line and I have tons of data on about half of his descendants. Lastly I am trying to determine if the was a Durham HALL was a son of Clark and Penelope. If he was, I need to confirm this and can then link the family back to Virginia. Now for the PIPPIN/ENs. I am seeking the descendants of Loftis PIPPIN/EN and his wife, Mary HALL. Mary was R."Clark" HALL's older sister, and Loftis PIPPIN/EN was Penelope's older brother. Robert Clark PIPPIN/EN was their son and he was a Justice of the Peace in Sumter County in the 1840s also. "Clark" PIPPIN/EN married Priscilla HATTER in Greene County, in 1834. Clark PIPPIN/EN died in York, AL in 1881. If anyone thinks they Might be descended from either of these two lines please contact me.

Peter and William R. SINCLAIR were in Sumter Co., AL, in 1850. They both were in Perry Co., AL, for the 1830 census. When did they move? Is there any information about other SINCLAIRs in Sumter Co. around this time? William R. was apparently in Perry Co. by 1832, but some evidence suggests that Peter was in TN in 1835-1837.

Looking for information on a John D. SHAW (husband's g grandfather). John was a member of the South Sumter Guard during the Ciivil War, reportedly was wounded, and subsequently died "at home" of injuries received. He is listed on the Civil War Memorial @ the Courthouse in Livingston, AL. Last record of him is in the 1860 Sumter Co Census. It lists he and his wife Masonline Jane (GREEN) SHAW and their baby Jane, age 1, residing in Intercourse (now Siloam) near York, AL. We can trace his wife and daughter on to Baldwin and eventually Mobile County, AL. There is, however, no further record of John, nor can we find a burial site after extensive cemetery searches Any information will be appreciated..
