James G. Utter

January 21, 1929 ~ July 16, 2019

James G. Utter, 90, of Dillsboro passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Highpoint Health in Lawrenceburg. James was born Monday, January 21, 1929 in Dillsboro, Indiana, the son of Harley and Louella (Heath) Utter. He served his country in the U.S. Army and graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1948. He married Phyllis Gross Ensinger October 24, 1998 and she preceded him in death January 27, 2018. He was a member of the Osgood Baptist Church and former member of Dillsboro United Methodist Church. He retired from Seagram's in 1991 after 40 years, was a former member of Distillery Workers Union and a lifetime farmer. He was a member of the Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post #292 of Dillsboro. He enjoyed traveling, walking, porch time with family and reading to educate himself.

James is survived by son James (Ruth) Utter Jr. of Montana; daughters: Peggy (Chad) Day of Covington, Kentucky, Becky (Steve) Chipman of Dillsboro and Beverly Utter of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers: John (Marie) and Steve (Kathy) Utter both of Dillsboro; sisters: Mary Decker and Scharline Field both of Arizona; grandchildren: Stephanie (Jeff) Taylor, Joel Van Cleave, Maria Salazar, Toni (Austin) Proffitt, Jay Utter, and Lacey Utter; great-grandchildren: Devon, Xavier, Rylan, Kayleigh, Paxton and Phoenyx; 3 stepchildren; several step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by wife, Phyllis; parents; brothers: Norman (Phyllis), Wayne (Jean) and Jerry Utter; sisters: Nellie Hehe and Genieve (Wes) Young; 1 stepson Mike Ensinger and 2 brothers-in-law: Charles Decker and William Field.

A service celebrating his life will be held 11 AM Monday, July 22 at Filter-DeVries-Moore Funeral Home in Dillsboro with Pastors Steve Allen and Deb Beason officiating.

Family and friends may gather to share and remember him 5 - 7 PM Sunday, July 21 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, with full military rites provided by Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post #292.
