Robertson, Samuel Matthews, lawyer and member of Congress, was born at Plaquemine, La., Jan. 1, 1852. He attended the Collegiate institute at Baton Rouge and in 1874 graduated at the Louisiana State university. He then studied law and in 1877 was admitted to the bar. In 1879 he was elected to represent East Baton Rouge parish in the lower house of the state legislature. He was then for some time professor of natural history and commandant of the cadets in the Louisiana State university, and was elected to the 50th Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, Edward W. Robertson. He was again elected to Congress in 1890 and was reelected at each succeeding election until 1904, representing the 6th Louisiana district as a Democrat. In 1904 he was succeeded by Hon. George K. Favrot.
