Biographies and Photos of Carroll County Ancestor

Lee McMillan

Birth: 29 April 1847 Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi.

Parents: Smith McMillan and his wife, Obedience Annette/Aurelia (Hall) McMillan.

Lee enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, at the age of fifteen, in Company B, 28th Mississippi Calvary, serving faithfully until the surrender in April, 1865. After the war, he entered the University of Mississippi, but did not graduate. In 1869, he began the life of a cotton planter, which he continued many years.

Lee was an active member of the Democratic Party and served as a member of the Board of Education of Carroll County (Specific start date?) from the enactment of the school law until 1894. In that year, he went to Washington and took the office of File Clerk in the House of Representatives, fifty-third Congress, serving until 1 January 1896. From that date until March 1897, was a clerk of the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was then transferred to the Office of Secretary of the United States Senate, where he served until April, 1900 when he resigned and returned home to Mississippi. (Get specific US district and how many terms served.)

When was the pension board / law put into effect? When did he become President of the Commissioners Board?

Upon his return, he was made (elected?) President of County Pension Board he had been President of the Board of Pension Commissioners of Carroll County.

In 1907 Lee ran for the Mississippi State Senate (which district?) and was elected on 5 November 1907. (How many terms did he serve?) Lee was elected to the US? House of Representatives in 1919 (dates?)

Lee was a member of the Carrollton Presbyterian Church and served as a church Elder. He also was a member of the Masons Lodge number???. Lee married Mattie Buchanon, daughter of Thomas Edmondson Buchanan and Sarah Ann Edmondson Buchanan on 6 January 1869. Lee Died in 1926 (specific date) and his Bride in 1952. (List the names of the children in the order of their birth.)

Source for Lee's political information came from the Mississippi Congressional Record for 1923.

As indicated above, I still have many unanswered questions about my ancestor, Lee McMillan. Please contact me if you can provide any additional information on Lee, his ancestry, or his political career.

Thank you.
