JOHN T. BROWN

Query posted June 22, 2006

I am seeking information on the estate of John T. Brown (b. 1799; d. 1848) who was a property owner in Carroll County, MS. until the time of his death in 1848. His wife's name was Nancy Brown and she later was the administratrix of his estate in 1848. He also had three sons: Joseph (b. 1830), William (b. 1832), and John (b. 1838).

I am particularly interested in the slaves held by John T. Brown in the 1840's, and am searching for any records that may name them – for I am looking to make a connection between a Jane Richardson (b. 1843-44 in MS as a slave) and the Brown family. I was told that the best records to search would be John T. Brown's Administration Papers that would be held at the Carroll Co. courthouse (I was told it would likely list his slaves), the Carroll County Estate Distributions (for settlements), and the Distribution Deeds of the slaves.

I am also told that these County Deed Books make references to John T. Brown:

Book D, pages 53, 291, and 733

Book E, page 244

Book F, page 527, 445, and 617

Book H, page 199, 361

The appraisers of John T. Brown's estate in 1848 were John O. Young, Elias Fisher, and Alfred Murdock. Much of his property was located in Township 18, Range 6E.

Nancy Brown, after her husband's death, moved her family to Hays County, Texas. They are listed on its 1860 census and slave schedule. It is here we find Jane Richardson on the 1880 census of Hays Co., TX - in which is states she was born in Mississippi.

I thank you for your time and willingness to help.

Sincerely,

Colin Hicks
