Looking for information for William James Smith and wife Nancy Jane Clark

William's parent's are unknown.  William is known to be in Carroll County from 1870 to 1892.  The 1870 Census is the earliest record of William and Nancy together in Carroll County.  They were married approximately 1867, since their first son, Charley is listed with them, at the age of 2 years.  William is believed to be the William J. Smith, listed with Co. K of the 11th Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War.  There is no other record that can currently be found at to William's origin, however, family oral history indicates that his parents had substantial acreage with many slaves, and that William may have run a cotton gin prior to moving to Texas for a brief time in 1892, and then on permanently to Oklahoma.  His son, Charles, returned to Tallahatchie Co., Miss, and can be found there in 1910.  Children of William and Nancy are Charley, Kirby, Minnie, and Dona.

Nancy Jane Clark Smith, is the daughter of Rowland Clark and Lucinda Lesley, died in 1892, and is buried in the Blackhawk Cemetery.  It is believed that Nancy was part Indian, through her mother, and photographs substantiate this belief.  No record can be found of Lucinda Lesley's origin.  Rowland and Lucinda were married in 1838 in Carroll County.

Any help ??
