MANNING

A great portion of the Manning information is resourced in DAUNTLESS DUNN - 1970, North Dakota Place Names by Douglas Wick, and Origins of North Dakota Place Names by Mary Ann Barnes Williams.

Manning is located in Section 6 of Township 143. Range R95, eleven miles south of Killdeer. It was named for Daniel Manning, a pioneer rancher in the area, after county organizer William P. Owens rejected the suggestion of naming it Owensville in his honor. It was designated as the county seat in 1910, and regularly competes with Amidon, in Slope County, for the honor of being the smallest county seat in the nation. It claimed a population of 300 in 1920, but it has not reported more than 100 since, with a 1980 count of 42. The post office was established 16 March 1908 with Ethel Vene Allen Owens as Postmaster.
