COUNTY FORMATION

Renville county was originally formed in 1872-1873, the territory starting north at the international boundary, on the south by the fourteenth standard parallel, and between the eleventh and twelfth guide meridians.

Renville was named for Joseph Renville, trader, interpreter, mentioned in connection with the translation of the Bible and other important matters."    North Dakota History and People, 1917, page 486

In 1885 Renville county lost five southern townships when Ward county was formed. In 1887, Renville gained six townships when Wynn county was dissolved. In 1891, Renville county was absorbed by Ward county. It wasn't until 20 Jul 1910 that Renville county was formally organized once again.

The county seat is Mohall.
