LOUIS AGARD

JOSEPH RALPH AGARD

Joseph was born to Louis, Jr. (1895-5 October 1935) and Blanchett Chumsanet Archambault (31 December 1900-16 January 1957) Agard on 20 October 1921 in McIntosh, Corson County, South Dakota. Blanche later married David Tiokasin. Louis is the son of Louis (1830-1890) and Monica Agard (See above). Joseph's siblings included Jerry (1920), Wallace (1923), Francis (1925), Evelyn (1928), Theresa (1930), Edina (1932), Elsie (1934), and Shirley (1938).
Joseph enlisted in the U. S. Army on 12 November 1941. He served in the 5th Marines Division, 5th Engineer Battalion and died in World War II on 25 December 1944. One record has his death as an accident and another has him killed in action at Mariana Islands. He was a Staff Sergeant at the time of his death.

MATTHEW AMERICAN HORSE

Matthew, son of George (Whiteman) and Lucy Hawk Bear American Horse was born in Cannon Ball on 22 September 1923.
His father George was born on 15 April 1891, married Lucy on 5 October 1917, and died on 26 January 1947 in Sioux County. His burial is unknown. George's mother was Susan American Horse, born in Dakota Territory in 1844 and was living with George and Lucy in 1930. Lucy was born 11 July 1903 and died in Burleigh County, North Dakota on 25 July 1985. Matthew's known siblings included; Charlotte, Mildred (1927), Wilma, and Antoine, George, and Gloria.
A soldier in World War II, he enlisted on 14 May 1943 and served in the 117th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division. He was killed in action in Aachen, Germany on 26 October 1944. American Legion Post 259 was named American Legion Matthew American Horse Post 259 in his name.

Halvor lived in Sioux County with his son Elmer although his property was located in Emmons County.

HENRY ARNOLD ANKLE

Only son of Daniel (Iskahula) and Marcella Arnold (1867-1938) Ankle (Also Marcella Hanley and Marcella Conner). Henry was born on 5 April 1894 (1893) at Fort Yates. He had a Step-brother George Claude Hanley (1884).
Henry was a Code Talker in World War I. He enlisted on 26 April 1918, and honorably discharged as a Corporal on 31 May 1919 after serving in Company H, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. Contributor j.lynn provided this military information: "Enlisted 26 April 1918 at McIntosh, South Dakota; served with the 75th Company 164th Depot Brigade 89th Division; arrived in France 28 June 1918; participated in these battles at the front, with dates: Toul Sector - 8 August 1918 to 12 September 1918, St. Mihiel Offensive - 12th to 16th September 1918, and Meuse Argonne Offensive - 20 October 1918 to 11 November 1918; attained the rank of Corporate 30 October 1918; Source: Record of the AEF (American Expeditionary Forces) World War I, relating to American Indians Serving with the AEF 1917-1919, Image 13."
Henry married Ethel Many Deeds (1902) on 8 February 1921 in Dewey County, South Dakota. Their children included: Jesse Everett (1922-1956), Henry Winfred (1924-1939), Corinne Maud (1926), Lorraine/Elaine Lawrence (1930-1974), Theodore, and Aurelia Violet (1938-1972).
Henry died on 27 July 1954 and is buried in Little Eagle, Corson County, South Dakota.
