Blue Mass Scenic Area is located in the Kern Mountains about 86 miles from Ely via the Schellbourne Pass Road. A 96 mile alternate route is possible via US 6 through Connors Pass and the North Spring Valley Road.   Spires, cliffs and great rounded outcrops rise on either side of the road.  Especially interesting are the very large crystals of mica, of a variety called muscovite, with a silky mirror-like sheen. As the rock weathers, the mica crystals erode out. The shining crystals are strewn everywhere and glitter like broken glass in the sunshine. The granite formations rise on either side of Blue Mass Creek, which has carved a canyon into the rock formations.

Cave Lake and Success Loop, a 33 mile drive through the most scenic area near Ely. Drive east on Highway 50 from Ely about 7 miles to the Cave Lake turnoff on your left. The lake is about 3 miles. Then proceed up Success Loop, and be on the watch for deer, elk and other wildlife. Wild flowers are abundant as well as is other flora.  At the top of Success pass is the turnoff to Camp Success, the Boy Scout Camp. Straight ahead will bring you down through the Duck Creek area until you come to Highway 93, about 12 miles north of McGill.   Passenger cars can make this trip easily but weather conditions should be checked as the majority of the road is unpaved and can be muddy.
