Robert J. Adler

Robert James Adler, 82, of Huron, passed away surrounded by his family on Dec. 16, 2017, at Parkvue Health Care Center in Sandusky.

He was born on April 20, 1935 in Toledo. He attended Scott High School, where he played basketball and performed in musicals. He attended the University of Toledo and graduated in 1958 with a degree in education.

Through mutual friends, he was introduced to the former Carol Greunke of Toledo, and they were married on June 27, 1959 in Gesu Church in Toledo. They soon moved to Huron, where Bob was a teacher for many years at Huron High School, and began raising a family. He taught English and speech at the high schools. Among his passions as an educator were leading and directing theater performances, including plays and musicals. He retired in 1988.

He donated his time to the community by serving on school boards and assisting in sports. He was an umpire in the Gremlin and Girls Summer Softball leagues. He served on the board of education for Huron Schools and Ehove Career Center for eight years until 2003. In retirement, Mr. Adler worked in security at Cedar Point Amusement Park and was an event coordinator for Fisher Titus Medical Center in Norwalk. Mr. Adler was credited in 1962 for pulling two young girls, who broke through the ice while playing on Lake Erie, rescuing the youngsters from the frigid waters.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, and brothers, Jim and Bill Adler. He leaves behind his son, Bryan Adler, and wife, Sharon; son, Kirk Adler, and wife Andrea; daughter, Julie Hartten; grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, and Austin Adler, and Spencer and Ashley Dukeman; sister Janet Pitzen and brother, Herbert Adler.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday December 20, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, where Wake Services will be at 7:30 pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 21, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron.
