Obtaining Records


Ohio did not require the keeping of birth and death records until 1867.

Birth and Death Books  for Lawrence County for 1868 - Dec. 20, 1938 are not held at the courthouse, but
at the Alden Library, Ohio Universtiy, in Athens, Ohio.

An Index of Births can be found on the Lawrence Register Website.

An Index of Deaths  can be found on the Lawrence Register Website.

For 1909 to present, birth and death certificates may be obtained from the Ohio Health  Department.
Certified birth and death certificates from the Ohio Health Department may be obtained by walk-in service,
 mail-in service, or Internet service.  See the website for complete details.

Certified copies of birth and death certificates can be obtain from the local health department  
for the years 1945 to present.


Uncertified death certificates for the years 1913 - 1944 are available for the Ohio Historical Society
for a fee of $7.00.   1909 - 1912 and 1945 - 1953 can be purchased by using this form.
