Stephen & Nancy Smith Families The story of this family’s earliest ancestry begins the 18th day of April 1837, when Stephen Smith (born about 1809 in North Carolina) purchased what is thought to be his first parcel of land at the Tuscaloosa Land Office. This parcel, the Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of section 7, Township 15 - S, Range 15 – W, was located in Fayette County, Alabama near the town of Vernon. That part of Fayette County would later become Sanford County and eventually Lamar County. Two other purchases were made of land parcels adjoining the first. In 1852, the Northeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of section 7, Township 15 – S, Range 15 – W. And in 1858 the East ˝ of the Southeast quarter of section 6, along with the Southwest quarter of the Southeast quarter of section 6, both in Township 15 – S, Range 15 – West. Included in that purchase was the Southwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of section 7, Township 15 – S, Range 15 – W. In terms of physical landmarks, his property ran south from Lebanon Church, turning west close to the present day Vernon city limits, going west almost as far as Turner Cemetery. Watson Creek runs through this land and today I believe there are gravel pits located within parts of the original boundaries. Stephen Smith’s wife was Nancy Unknown (born about 1813 in Alabama). Together they raised 10 of 11 known children. Their names were:
He and his bride to be until death, Rachel Catherine Pennington (born 1 March 1839 in Fayette County, Alabama and died 23 August 1904 in Franklin County, Alabama) were married on 15 September 1851 at the home of the bride’s parents, George W. Pennington and Sarah Louisa Lusk Pennington, who were also residents of Vernon. Isaac and Rachel Smith had the first 8 of 14 children born in the Lamar County, Vernon area before moving first to Marion County near Guin about 1871, and about 1890 they relocated to Spruce Pine in Franklin County, Alabama. The names of the children are: I. William Andrew Smith (born 11 July 1858 – died 6 February 1936) He married Elizabeth “Betty” Shelnut II. Henry Alexander Smith (born 7 March 1860) He married “Muggie” Adams III. James Erwin Smith (born 17 July 1861 – died 29 November 1939) He married Mary Sannovah Gann IV. Luvicia Angelina Smith (born 5 November – died 1 April 1944) She married William Joseph Shelnut V. Stephen Franklin Smith (born 26 November 1865 – died 27 April 1956) He married Milda Arabelle Frost VI. George T. Smith (born 14 March 1867 – died 19 August 1945) He married Margaret Warren VII. Nancy L. Smith (born 26 December 1868) VIII. Martha E. Smith (born 16 September 1870 – died after 1900) IX. Mary B. Smith (born 30 January 1872 – died 22 December 1956) She married Riley Baker X. Andrew Houston Smith (born 26 January 1874 – died 9 September 1876) XI. John Burton Smith (born 17 July 1877) He married (1) Meldonia Thomas, (2) unknown XII. Sarah Elizabeth Smith (born 26 April 1879 – died 7 April 1947) She married Asa Zachariah Frost
10. Catherine Smith (born about 1852 in Alabama). Nothing else is known about her. 11. Francis Smith (born about 1855 in Alabama). Nothing else is known about her. The last appearance of the elder Stephen Smith is in the 1860 census. No other information is known about him at this time.
