W. H. FEURT – is a native of Scioto county, Ohio, born July 25, 1852.  He graduated from
 college with the title of medical doctor, and is now engaged in the practice of medicine and
 surgery in Proctorville.  He was married in Quaker Bottom, Lawrence county, Ohio,
 November 29, 1877, to Ida L. Morrison, who was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, April 14,
 1858.  Their children are:  Kenneth, born September 19, 1878; Fred., April 18, 1880.  Mrs.
 Feurt’s parents were both born in this county.  Their names are L. D. and Margaret
 (Crawford) Morrison.  The parents of Mr. Feurt are Daniel and Francis (Henry) Feurt; they
 are both deceased.  Mr. Feurt is a resident of Union township, and should be addresses at
 Proctorville, Lawrence county, Ohio.

JOSEPH FITZER – gives his approval to this work of genealogy and war record, that future
generations may follow their predecessors in maintaining the honor of their country and
institutions of liberty and learning, and the safety of the genealogy of the race.  He was
born in town. 2, section 16, Elizabeth township, in 1842.  Mr. Fitzer was married in
Powellsville, Scioto county, in 1866, to Nancy J. Smiley, who is a native of this township,
born in 1844.  The parents of Joseph Fitzer are James and Martha (Thomas ) Fitzer, who
settled in this county in 1835.  The parents of Mrs. Fitzer are James and Mary
(Worthington) Smiley, settlers of Lawrence county in 1834.  Mr. Fitzer was a soldier of the
rebellion.  He enlisted October 24, 1861, for three years, in Company H., 9th Virginia
Infantry.  On the 10th of November, 1861, he was taken prisoner, and sent to Richmond,
Virginia, where he remained seven months.  After being exchanged he returned to his
command and served out his full time.  He reenlisted and served to the close of the war.
Mr. Fitzer is a resident of Elizabeth township, where he pursues the vocation of farming.

CHRISTIAN FOX – is a native of this county, born in Elizabeth township, December 19,
1841.  His parents are John Fox, who was born in Pennsylvania, July 23, 1813, and Elizabeth
(Ward) Fox, who was born in Virginia, October 11, 1817, and died June 15, 1874.  They were
married in this county.  He came here in 1833.  December 30, 1869, Christian Fox was
married to Sarah A. Martin, who was born at Laurel Furnace in the year 1854.  Her parents
are Joseph and Nancy (Palmer) Martin, the former died April 15, 1879, age 66 years.  The
children of Mr. Fox are:  Willard B., born August 8, 1872; Earnest A., January 9, 1874;
Edward P., October 15, 1875; Orville F., January 17, 1878; Olive B., November 3, 1879, died
February 3, 1881; Nellie A., April 19, 1882.  All reside at home.  Mr. Fox, his father, and one
brother were in the rebellion; Christian enlisted on July 25, 1861, and was discharged for
disabilities.  His father and brother, John were both wounded.  They enlisted October,
1861, and August, 1862, respectively.  Mr. Fox is engaged in farming in Elizabeth township.
His address is Powellsville, Scioto county, Ohio.

GEORGE FREEMAN – is the son of William and Sarah (Parker) Freeman,
settlers of this county in 1828; the father died in 1848 and the mother in
1860.  George was born in Pitselvania county, Virginia, April 21, 1811.  His
first marriage was to Rebecca Brubaker; their marriage took place August
28, 1838; she was born January 4, 1803, and died May 25, 1866.  The
following children were born by this marriage:  Malissa, born October 10,
1839, died July 18, 1841; Camillus H., November 19, 1841, resides in
Lawrence county, Ohio; Emily C., May 19, 1843, died July 13, 1844; William
F., March 16, 1846, resides in Lawrence county.  Two of the sons served in
the late war—C.H. Freeman enlisted August 29, 1861, in the 5th Virginia
Volunteer Infantry, for three years; he reenlisted February 15, 1864, in
Company G, First Virginia Veteran Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged
July 21, 1865.  William Freeman enlisted in 1864 in the 188th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry and served about one year, when he was discharged for disability,
at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Moses Freeman, a brother of George, was
also a soldier of the late war; he enlisted in 1862, in a cavalry regiment at
Ironton, Ohio; he was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg, and died from
his wound at Washington, in 1864; his body was brought home and buried on
his farm in Fayette township.  The second marriage of Mr. Freeman was
solemnized in Lawrence county, September 27, 1866, his choice being
Harriet (Ballard) Smith, who was born in Wayne county, Virginia, April  ,
1815; her parents are both deceased; their names were John and Nancy
(Garrett) Smith; the latter died in 1877.  Mr. Freeman has been a member
of the First Baptist church of South Point for forty years; he has been a
citizen of this county fifty-four years, and has lived all that time within one
mile of his present home; he is at present 71 years of age, and enjoys good
health.  He has been a very great and constant worker in the church, holding
all the offices in the society; he is at present the oldest deacon in the
church.  Mr. Freeman is a farmer residing in Fayette township.  Address,

LEVI J. FRIEL – was born in Harrison county, Virginia, November 26, 1814.  His parents are
both natives of Virginia; his father, Jeremiah Friel, was born in Augustus county, that
State, March 30, 1793, and his wife, Eva Hill, was born in the western part of the State,
March 8, 1793, and her death took place in October, 1830; their marriage occurred in
Randolph county, Virginia, in 1813.  Levi J. Friel was married in Guernsey county, Ohio, April
16, 1848, his choice being Mary M. Moser, who was born in that county, May 25, 1830.  They
remained in Guernsey county, twenty-one years, when they removed to Lawrence county,
Ohio, May 8, 1869.  The children of Mr. Friel are:  Emma, born March 11, 1849, resides in
Noble county; Nira, June 18, 1850, resides in Kansas; Hannah, July 4, 1852, resides in this
township; Jameson, August 28, 1854, resides in this township; Jeremiah, September 7,
1856, resides in Kansas; Sampson, February 19, 1859, resides in this township; Charles A.,
March 28, 1861, resides in Rome; Adam, July 21, 1863, resides in Mason; John B., November
16, 1865, died in 1869; William U., June 2, 1869, resides in Mason; Louis and Jessie,
December 11, 1872, died September 15 and 26, 1873.  The parents of Mrs. Friel are
Abraham and Hannah (Morris) Moser, born September, 1802 and August 1, 1808,
respectively; they settled in Guernsey county in 1816.  Mr. Friel was a member of Company
K, 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He took part in the two days’ fight at Shiloh, where he
was taken prisoner, and taken to Tuscaloosa, where he remained thirty days; he was then
taken to Montgomery, Alabama, and paroled; he was exchanged at Huntsville, Alabama.  He
was disabled from doing any further duty; he now draws a pension of $24 per month.  Mr.
Friel has always resided on the same land in this township, and he has a splendid bearing
farm.  His postoffice address is Rappsburg, Lawrence county, Ohio.
