HANDLEY -– is a native of this county and township, born January 10, 1845. He is the son of Constantine and Mary (Roach) Handley. The latter died April 11, 1882. He served his country in the war of 1861. He enlisted December 20, 1862, in the 8th Independent Sharpshooters. He served to the close of the war. He was married to Julia A. Ferguson, in Wayne county, West Virginia, August 1, 1872. She is the daughter of Thomas and Phereba (Lyons) Ferguson, and was born in Louisa, Lawrence county, Kentucky, November 14, 1856. They have two children, namely: Constantine, born May 14, 1873, and Lindsey G., February 29, 1876. The grandparents of A. C. Handley were William and Margaret (Henderson) Handley. They were both born in Monroe county, Virginia, and died in the same county. Farming is the occupation of Mr. Handley. He is a resident of Symmes township. -– was born in this township, February 5, 1837. His parents
came to
this county in 1835. His father, Logan Handley, was born March 1, 1800; and his mother, Leatha (Roach) Handley, was born December 19, 1798. John W. Handley was married in Symmes township, October 5, 1865, to Martha L. Powers, who is a native of this township, born December 19, 1846. Her father, John Powers, was born February 5, 1818, and her mother, Mary A. (Wiseman) Powers, May 23, 1817. The family of Mr. Handley are: Jennie E., born August 11, 1866; Mary E., July 29, 1868; ; John F., September 20, 1870; Henry L., August 26, 1873; George A., January 24, 1876. Mr. Handley enlisted in July, 1862, in Company D, 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war. The 91st passed through two campaigns, those of 1863 and 1864. The first was gone through with successfully, without loss of life. The second was one of almost unparalleled hardship, and attended with great loss of life. The organization of the regiment was began in July, 1862, and in one month was over its quota. During the fall of 1862 the regiment saw comparatively little service, but were preparing for the arduous work that was to follow. The engagements in which this regiment took part were: Buffalo, West Virginia; Fayetteville, Blake Farm, Cloyd Mountain, New River Bridge, Cow Pasture River, Lynchburg, Stephenson’s Depot, Winchester, Martinsburg, around Charlestown, Virginia; Opequan, Fisher Hill, Cedar Creek. The regiment arrived at Winchester, April 7, 1865, and was incorporated with the army of the Shenandoah, under General Hancock, forming a part of the first brigade, fourth provisional division. After the surrender of General Lee the army of the Shenandoah was in part disorganized. The 91st regiment remained at Winchester till the 2d of June, 1865, when they were ordered to report to General Emory. The regiment was discharged from service June 30, 1865, having served the government faithfully two years, ten months, and eight days. Mr. Handley was a good and faithful soldier, and performed his duty in every place he was called upon to act. Symmes township is the place of his residence. Farming is his occupation. Address, Handley postoffice, Lawrence county, Ohio. GEORGE HARMON – was born April 10, 1825, and came to this county in 1839. His parents came the same year; their names are Thomas and Sarah (Green) Harmon. George was married January 22, 1845 to Louisa Snyder, who was born September 12, 1826; she is the daughter of John H. and Mary (Elsessor) Snyder, settlers of this county in 1825. The children of George Harmon are: Mary, born December 21, 1846; John, June 4, 1849; Sarah, January 26, 1853; Jane, October 19, 1854; Margaret, February 16, 1856; Andrew, June 25, 1859; Louisa, November 25, 1863; they all reside in this township. Mr. Harmon died in 1863, and the entire control of the farm rests on his son, Andrew, and the large crops attest the manner in which it is done. His postoffice address is Rappsburg, Lawrence county, Ohio. GEORGE HEINE – was born in Goettingen, Germany, December 3, 1813. He was married in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, August 20, 1848, to Magdalina Hoeffner, who was born in Strasburg, Germany, February 8, 1828. They have the following children: George, born September 19, 1849, is a proprietor of the East Ironton House; Caroline, September 4, 1851, resides at home; William H., September 24, 1853, resides at home; Louise, July 17, 1855, died April 1, 1859; Henry, December 30, 1856, resides in this county; Sarah (Washburn, jr.), September 26, 1858, resides in Lawrence county, Ohio; Magdaline (Balard), June 27, 1859, resides in this county; Elizabeth, February 26, 1862, resides at home; Mary, January 6, 1865, resides at home; Edward, February 4, 1867, resides at home. The parents of Mr. Heine were Henry and Mrs. Heine, both of whom died in Germany. George and Barbara (Halt) Hoeffner are the parents of Mrs. Heine. Mr. Heine died May 18, 1874. His son, William H., has taken charge of the farm since his father’s death. He is a very industrious young man and has been very successful in the management of the farm. He makes fruit-raising and gardening a specialty. William H. made a trip to Florida in 1878, where he engaged in fruit-raising and gardening, and he gathered a good amount of information. He returned in 1879—making the trip with his team. Louise, the second daughter of Mr. Heine, met her death in a very sad manner: when about 4 years of age she was playing with her brother William, where her father had been burning some stumps, and getting too close to the fire her clothes ignited, and before any assistance could come to her she was frightfully burned, and she died six hours after the accident. The mother of Mrs. Heine died in July, 1835. The postoffice address of William Heine is Ironton, Lawrence county, Ohio. JACOB HOPKINS – was born in Scioto county, Ohio, July 24, 1837. His parents are Charles and Sarah (Dillon) Hopkins. Jacob Hopkins and Charlotte Pinkerman were married in Lawrence county, Ohio, September 5, 1859. She is also a native of Scioto county, born September 8, 1838. The parents of Mrs. Hopkins are Charles and Elizabeth (Smith) Pinkerman. Mr. Hopkins came to this county in 1866. He was a soldier in the war of 1861. He enlisted August 11, 1862, in Company F, 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war, when he received an honorable discharge and returned home. He was twice wounded, first at Floyd Mountain, Virginia, in his left shoulder, and again at Halltown, Virginia, in his left thigh. He was taken to the hospital on account of last wound, where he remained four months, returning to duty. The children of Mr. Hopkins are: Mariah E., born September 24, 1860; Charlotte J. M., October 5, 1862; Emma B., December 13, 1867; Charles W., March 8, 1876; Ira J. F., February 19, 1879. Besides his own Mr. Hopkins has raised five children, of whom Martha C. Pinkerman was the first taken, born February 4, 1867; Deborah A., August 4, 1866; Charles H., June 21, 1868; James, in 1871; Thomas J., in 1874. All are his brother’s children. Mr. Hopkins is a resident of Lawrence township, where he is engaged in tilling the soil. His postoffice address is Willow Wood, Lawrence county, Ohio. ADOLPHUS W. HURT – and Elizabeth Whitehead were married in Lawrence county, Ohio June 3, 1862. Mr. Hurt was born in Augusta county, Virginia, November 6, 1833, and his wife in this county December 19, 1838. The following are their children: Isaac K., born July 20, 1864, resides at home; Albert C., November 24, 1866, died August 10, 1871; Dora E., September 16, 1868, died September 16, 1869; Amanda F., February 24, 1870, resides at home; Harrison W., October 6, 1871, died December 31, 1871; Jessie C., May 22, 1873, resides at home; Samuel W., November 19, 1874, died August 14, 1875; Ira S., September 2, 1878, resides at home. Cornelius Hurt, the father of Adolphus, was born in Madison county, Virginia, October 10, 1802, and came to this county in 1835. He died February 24, 1861. Mary J. Hurt, the mother of Adolphus, was born in Augusta county, Virginia, October 28, 1801, and died March 20, 1876. They came to this county in 1835. The parents of Mrs. Hurt are Samuel and Martha (Bates) Whitehead. The first was born in Halifax county, Virginia, May 16, 1805, and came to this county in 1830; he died October 10, 1881. The mother of Mrs. Hurt, Martha Whitehead, was born in the same county and State, February 8, 1808, and is living at the age of 74 years. Mr. Hurt has held the office of township clerk from 1862 to 1874. He is engaged in farming and school-teaching in Fayette township. Address, Burlington, Lawrence county, Ohio. ALLEN C. HUTCHISON – is a physician, residing in Marion, Aid township. He came to Lawrence county in 1867. He was born in Monroe county, West Virginia, June 24, 1836. He was married in Kentucky, July 11, 1860, to Eliza J. Bussey, who is a native of Cabell county, West Virginia, born October 7, 1841. Her parents are Henry S. and Christenna R. (Miller) Bussey. The parents of Allen are G. W. Hutchison and Sophia W. (Abott) Hutchison. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchison have but one child: Henry W., born March 29, 1861, resides in Alabama.
