L. MAGEE—was born in Proctorville, December 11,
1859. His father, Luther E.
Magee, came to this county in 1835, and his mother, Rebecca (Miller) Magee, is a native of this county. In Symmes township, this county, Mr. Magee was married to Mary A. Vermillion. She was born in Arabia, July 27, 1865. The date of this marriage was August 12, 1881. The parents of Mrs. Magee are Logan and Mary A. (Wilson) Vermillion. Her father was born in this county, and her mother came to this county in 1853. Irvin L. Magee is a physician, residing in Arabia, where he should be addressed. JOSEPH MASSIE
– was born in Monroe county, Virginia; his parents are Jonathan and Mary
(Goare) Massie, who settled in this county, December 25, 1830. The first wife of Joseph Massie was Mary A. Miller, who was the mother of ten children, namely: Isaac, born November 4, 1841, died February 7, 1879; Jonathan, August 31, 1843, resides in Mason; Vinson, June 7, 1845, resides in Mason township; William, October 9, 1847; George, May 25, 1849, resides in Mason township; Alexander, November 15, 1851, resides in Mason township; Mary C., March 15, 1853; Rachael E., October, 1855, resides in Mason township; Nancy A., November 16, 1860; Alice, July 6, 1863. The date of Mrs. Massie’s birth was June 23, 1823; the date of their marriage was November 25, 1840. Jonathan Massie is married to Serina Howard; Vinson married Eliza Neil, and she died March 16, 1881, he was then married to Catherine Paine; William is married to Jennie Harford; George is married to Mary Coates; Alexander is proprietor of a store at Greasy Ridge; Mary C. married T. J. Tagg; Rachael married LeRoy Payne. The second wife of Mr. Massie is America Harris, who was born December 14, 1843; they were married May 25, 1873. Their children are: Sarah E., born May 1, 1874; Ross E., October 27, 1875; Effama, August 26, 1881. Creed W. and Elizabeth (Neil) Harris are the parents of Mrs. Massie. Mrs. Massie’s first husband was Henry Sowards; he died in the war. By this marriage were born two children: Creede F., born June 5, 1862; Nancy E., July 15, 1864, she is deceased. MASSIE – came to this county with his parents on the 25th of
December, 1830.
They settled on a farm of eighty acres. Patten lived with his parents until he was 22 years of age, and helped improve their land. September 20, 1866, he was married to Cynthia Allen, who was born in Mason township, May 16, 1844. He then settled on a farm of his own, containing 160 acres, which he has improved, and on which he still resides, and to which he has added forty acres more. He is an extensive raiser of stock, besides all the products of a well-conducted farm. His parents are Jonathan and Mary (Goare) Massie. William and Rulanna (Massie) Allen are the parents of Mrs. Massie. The children of Mr. Massie are: Albert, born June 7, 1867; Ida, May 24, 1869; Sarah, October 2, 1871; Mertie, November 29, 1873; and Sanford, July 20, 1876. They all make their home in Mason township. The birth of Mr. Massie took place April 17, 1826. His postoffice address is Greasy Ridge, Lawrence county, Ohio. SQUIRE
MASSIE -- and Rebecca Carnes were married May 8,
1845. He was born April 22,
1822, and she August 26, 1824. The following comprise their children: Armstrong, born February 14, 1846, resides in Mason; Malinda, September 25, 1847, resides in Gallia county; Cornelius, January 16, 1850, resides in Mason; Mary M., January 10, 1852, died September 10, 1852; Leah, December 14, 1853, resides in Mason; Thursey, June 17, 1857, died October 16, 1858. The parents of Mr. Massie are Johnathan and Mary (Goare) Massie, who settled in this county on December 25, 1830. The parents of Mrs. Massie are James and Comfort (Phillips) Carnes, who came to this county in 1840. Squire Massie has been a justice of the peace in this town for twenty years; he has also been commissioner for three years. He is also a farmer. Address, Greasy Ridge, Lawrence county, Ohio. STEPHEN
A. MASSIE – was the seventh child of Jonathan and Margaret
(Roach) Massie.
He was born in Mason township January 1, 1840. He lived with his parents until he was twenty-four years of age, when he was married to Rebecca F. Fox, who was born Walnut township, Gallia county, Ohio, June 29, 1843. They settled on the farm on which they still reside, which consists of 140 acres of splendid farming land. Stephen Massie was a member of the 1st Virginia Artillery, but was discharges for disability, but he then enlisted in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, in which regiment he served till the close of the war. The parents of Mrs. Massie are Emer and Sarah (Baker) Fox. The children of Mr. Massie are: George B. McClellan, born August 20, 1864; Robert O., December 3, 1867; Emmor M., January 4, 1871; Norman W., November 16, 1872; Sarah L., December 12, 1874; Willis V., February 21, 1877; Dellie E., May 18, 1879. They all reside in Mason township. The date of Mr. Massie’s marriage was February 28, 1863. The principal crops which Mr. Massie raises on his farm are corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and hay. MAYS – was born in Pike county, Kentucky, September 13,
1823. His parents,
James and Elizabeth (Rowe) Mays, came to this county in 1845. William Mays, the grandfather of Davidson, was born in Pittselvania county, Virginia, and his father, David Mays, was a soldier of the revolutionary war, and was killed at the battle of King’s Mountain, North Carolina. Davidson Mays was married in this county, September 5, 1849, to Mary Gore, who was born in this township July 16, 1824. Their children are: Rhoda J., born June 28, 1850, resides at home; James M., January 27, 1852, resides at home; William W., March 22, 1854, died January 19, 1882; John A., March 24, 1856, resides at home; Mary E., September 21, 1858, resides at home. The parents of Mrs. Mays, who came to this county in 1820, are William and Tabitha (Blankenship) Gore. James Gore, the grandfather of Mrs. Mays, was born in Rockbridge county, Virginia, and his father, William Gore, was also born in Virginia. The father of the last named was born in England, and emigrated to this country in 1754. Mr. Mays was a soldier of the war if 1861. He enlisted October 1, 1861, as a private in Company B, 1st Virginia Light Artillery. He was wounded at Manassas Junction, May 24, 1862, from the effects of which he was disabled from duty, and received his discharge August 25, 1862. A brother of Mrs. Mays was a member of the 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and after serving one year and eleven days, he was killed in the battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864. He was buried on the field, where his body remained for three months, when he was brought home and buried. Mr. Mays has filled the township offices: justice of the peace for twelve years, constable, clerk, and land -assessor, one year each. He is engaged in farming. JAMES MAYS – is a native of Pike county, Kentucky, born
January 5, 1828. His
father, James Mays, died March 28, 1859. His mother’s name is Elizabeth (Rowe) Mays. They settled in this county in 1845. Mr. Mays married Linda Webb in this county, February 11, 1847, where she was born April 26, 1830. Their children are: Mary A., born February 9, 1848, died February 11, 1849; Julia A., June 28, 1850, resides at home; Amos C., November 25, 1852, died April 6, 1876; Jefferson, January 21, 1855, died in 1858; Pricy M. (Bronton), April 3, 1858, resides in this county; Elizabeth J., August 13, 1860, died September 13, 1862; Sarah A. (Ankrim), August 17, 1863, resides at home; James Mays, junior (a grandchild), October 26, 1874, resides at home. The parents of Mrs. Mays are Elias and Jane (Gilliland) Webb. Mr. Mays was a soldier in the war of 1861. He enlisted October 13, 1861, in the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. After serving nine months he was taken sick and discharged for disability, at Williamsport, Maryland. He enlisted again on September 22, 1864, in the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Two of his brothers also served in the army. Davidson Mays in the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. He enlisted in 1861, and was disabled by a fall from a caisson, and was discharged in 1862. George W. Mays enlisted in 1864, in the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Mr. Mays was justice of the peace one term, in 1858. He is a farmer and minister of the gospel, residing in Fayette township. His postoffice address is South Point, Lawrence county, Ohio. PETER
McCARTY – was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, October 10,
1849. He is a resident
of Aid township; by occupation he is a collier. His parents, John and Hannah (Yates) McCarty, settled in this county in 1820. Peter McCarty was a soldier in the war of the rebellion. He enlisted in Company I, 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on the first of June, 1861, and served four years and ten months. He endured some very hard service, and was wounded in the left knee at the battle of Chickamauga. He was taken to the hospital where he remained four months, when he returned to his regiment and served to the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge, and returned home. McCLUR – is a native of this county, where he was born August
5, 1824; his
parents, James and Abbagail (Stacy) McClur, are both deceased; they settled in this county in 1817. William McClur’s first marriage was to Sarah Davidson, October 26, 1847; she was born in Lawrence county May 16, 1829; she was the daughter of Joseph and Jane (Bryson) Davidson; her death occurred March 7, 1865. The following are her children: Olevia R., resides in Convoy county, West Virginia; Charles, deceased; Jennie D., resides in Boyd county, Kentucky; Joseph E., resides in this county; Rose, deceased; Alvina A., resides in Convoy county, West Virginia; Mattie, resides in same county; Jasper, resides in Northfield, Minnesota. Mr. McClur’s second wife was Paulina Pemberton, who was born in Wayne county, Virginia, November 14, 1843; their marriage took place in Lawrence county December 25, 1866. Their children are: Harry, born September 24, 1867; Loran, September 6, 1869; Katie, March 25, 1871; Annie A., January 1, 1873; Dustin, October 14, 1875; Bertha, December 25, 1877; Rachel D., May 16, 1879; Baby, February 19, 1882—they all reside at home. The parents of Mrs. McClur are James and Lucy (Simmons) Pemberton, the first deceased. James McClur, a brother of William, was a soldier in the war of 1861, serving one year. Mr. McClur is engaged in farming in Fayette township. His postoffice address is South Point, Lawrence county, Ohio. CHARLES W. McCOY, SENIOR – is a native of Lawrence, Ohio, born July 26, 1825. His father, John McCoy, died May 16, 1866, and his mother, Jane (Campbell) McCoy, died June 3, 1869. They came to this county in 1814. Charles W. McCoy was married in this county June 13, 1858, to Urania M. Wheeler, who is also a native of this county, born November 26, 1827. Her parents, Joseph and Urania M. (Wheeler) Wheeler, settled in this county in 1819. Their deaths occurred in May, 1861, and August, 1866, respectively. Mr. McCoy held the office of county commissioner from 1875 to 1878. He was a member of the legislature for one term. He has been a school director for twenty-five years. The following are Mr. McCoy’s children: Homer W., born April 29, 1859, resides at home; Nelson W., November 27, 1861, died September 3, 1878; Joseph W., May 20, 1863, resides at home; Charles W., junior, February 16, 1866, resides at home. Two of Mr. McCoy’s brothers were in the war of 1861. Samuel and John both enlisting in 1863 in the 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and serving to the close of the war. H. N. Wheeler, a brother of Mrs. McCoy, enlisted in 1861, as a private in the 17th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was in the battle of Pittsburg Landing, where he was wounded, and was sent to the hospital, where he remained three months, when he returned to his command, and on the recommendation of General Logan he was promoted to captain and acting adjutant-general on the staff of Logan. His commission dated June 7, 1864. He served to the close of the war. Mr. McCoy is engaged in farming in Perry township. His address is Sheridan Coal Works, Lawrence county, Ohio. JOHN H. McGEE – is the son of Benjamin F. and Nancy (May) McGee. He was born in Russell county, Virginia, April 23, 1840. He came to this county in 1859. He was a soldier in the late war; first a member of Captain John S. George’s Independent Company of Cavalry. He enlisted on July 9, 1861, served three months and was honorably discharged at Ironton, September 19, same year. October 31, 1861, he reenlisted in Battery L, 1st Ohio Volunteer Artillery at Portsmouth, under Captain L. N. Robinson. He was discharged at Warrington Junction, Virginia, January 1, 1864, and reenlisted in the same regiment and company, under Captain F. C. Gibbs. He was with his battery in the following battles: Winchester in 1862, Port Republic, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, battle of the Wilderness, Winchester in 1864, Fisher Hill and Cedar Creek. At the last named battle he was wounded in the right ankle, which caused his leg to be amputated below the knee. He was sent to the hospital at Winchester, Virginia; from there he was sent to Frederick City, Maryland, and from there he was transferred to Central Park hospital, New York; from there to the West End hospital in Cincinnati, where he was discharged May 17, 1865. After his arrival home he opened a general grocery store at Coal Grove. He removed to Rock Camp in October, 1870, where he now keeps a general store, including dry goods, groceries, boots and shoes, and in connection he has a good farm and is proprietor of the grist mill at Rock Camp. Mr. McGee was married in this county, January 21, 1864, to Mary A. Holliday, who was born in this county, March 24, 1847. Her mother is Ann Holliday, whose parents are Andrew and Mary (Stover) Holliday. Mr. McGee has held the office of postmaster of Rock Camp for the last ten years; he also holds the office of the infirmary director for eight years; he also held several other offices. Address, Rock Camp, Lawrence county, Ohio. REV. JOSEPH D. McKEE – was ordained to the ministry of the regular Baptist church March 2, 1873, at South Point, Lawrence county, Ohio, by Rev. W. W. Davidson, James M. Kelley, and P. M. Robinson. He has been a faithful minister ever since. He is a native of this county, born April 4, 1824. His father, William McKee, died April 24, 1858, and his mother, Sarah (Davidson) McKee, is also deceased. The first marriage of Mr. McKee was in 1845 to Sarah L., daughter of William and Susan (Maddax) Lions. She was born February 15, 1824, and died in August, 1857. The following are the children by this marriage: Sarah, born March 2, 1846, died in October, 1846; Milton, September 4, 1848, died May, 1849; Vashti, April 8, 1850, resides in this county; Susan, July 18, 1852, resides at home; James, November 30, 1854, resides in Illinois; Dora, in June, 1856, died in May, 1857. The second wife of Mr. McKee is Parthenea Pemberton, who was born in this county February 21, 1841. Her parents are James and Lucy (Simmons) Pemberton. The former is deceased. The following are their children: Richard, born April 17, 1859, resides in this county; Cora D., September 12, 1860, resides at home; Lucy B., October 2, 1862, died in July, 1863; Lina Augusta, May 5, 1864, resides at home, as do all the rest; Sadie, October 5, 1866; Ernest R., December 12, 1868; Malinda, May 5, 1870; Curtis, July 12, 1872; Joseph, August 27, 1874; Gertrude, November 17, 1876. Samuel McKee, a brother of Joseph, enlisted in 1862, in the 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged for disability. Three brothers of Mrs. McKee were also soldiers in the late war, Henry, Elijah, and William Pemberton. They all served their full term. Mr. McKee is a farmer beside attending to his ministerial duties. He resides in Perry township. His address is South Point, Lawrence county, Ohio. PLEASANT McKNIGHT -- and Susan Boggs were united in marriage in the year 1830. Mr. McKnight is a native of Lawrence county, Ohio where he was born in 1810. His wife was born in Greenbrier county, Virginia, November 29, 1810. Her parents are Elliot and Hannah (Bowen) Boggs. The children of Mr. and Mrs. McKnight are as follows: Lucinda, born March 29, 1831, resides in Lawrence; James H., March 28, 1833; Anthony, August 29, 1835; died in the war; Emma, February 8, 1838, died February 9, 1879; Matilda, May 20, 1840; Patsey, February 17, 1842; Charles W., May 26, 1846; Lucetta, December 4, 1848, died August 17, 1849; Hannah G., November 13, 1851; Viola, February 16, 1854. The parents of Mr. McKnight are James and Patsey (Martin) McKnight. Mr. McKnight is engaged in farming in Lawrence township. His postoffice address is Aid, Lawrence county, Ohio. JOHN McMAKIN – was born at Pine Grove in 1854. He was married at Lake Run, Scioto county, in the year 1881, to Margaret McIntyre, who was born at Pine Grove Furnace in 1854. They have one child, Mary Ann, born November 7, 1881. The parents of Mr. McMakin came to Lawrence county in 1852. Their names are John and Mary (Kelley) McMakin. William and Anna (Duffey) McIntyre are the parents of Mrs. McMakin. Mr. McMakin has been clerk in Elizabeth township during the years 1880 and 1881. Mr. McMakin keeps a general merchandise store at Lawrence Furnace, Ironton, which is his postoffice address. MR. MELVIN – His son, James M., enlisted in 1863 in the ???th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served to the close of the war. Mrs. Melvin had one brother and three half-brothers in the war. James M. Gore enlisted in 1863 in the 5th Virginia and was killed at the battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864. Her half-brothers, Levi, Henry, and Isham Kelley, all served in the 5th Virginia, enlisting in 1861. Henry served until 1863, when he was discharged for disability. Levi and Isham served during the entire war. Mr. Melvin is the father of thirteen children, as follows: Baby, born February 5, 1843, died same day; William H., February 13, 1844, died August 20, 1852; Asseneth J. (Rowe), November 22, 1846, resides in this county; James M., May 24, 1847, resides in this county; Jonathan A., January 5, 1849, resides in Boyd county, Kentucky; Mary A. (Williams), November 17, 1850, resides in this county; Tabitha E. (Humphreys), December 13, 1852, resides in this county; John Co., August 29, 1854, resides in this county; Charles S., November 9, 1856, resides in this county; Cornelius H., December 4, 1858, resides in this county; Caroline D., February 16, 1861, died October 18, 1874; Sarah E., December 31, 1862, resides at home; William S., March 31, 1865, resides at home. Mr. Melvin’s postoffice address is Rock Camp, Lawrence county, Ohio. EMANUEL MOORE -- was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, January 29, 1813. He is one of the pioneers of this county, being almost 70 years of age. He has raised a family of sixteen children; his sobriety and industry make him one of the prominent citizens; he is a kind and faithful father and husband, courteous and hospitable to strangers, and is highly esteemed by all his neighbors. Mr. Moore was married in Ohio, to Rachael, daughter of Michael J. and Martha Kirkbride, who was born in Washington county, Ohio, December 20, 1823. Their children are Lemuel, born May 16, 1839; William, May 20, 1843; Lucinda, May 15, 1845; Isaac, August 20, 1847; Aaron, May 15, 1855; Nancy, September 20, 1856; Noah, April 29, 1860; Rachael, March 20, 1864. Aaron Moore, the father of Emanuel, died July 30, 1862; his mother, Hannah (Coon) Moore, died in March, 1881, at the age of 84 years. Mr. Moore is a farmer residing in Lawrence township. His postoffice address is Rock Camp, Lawrence county, Ohio. LEMUEL MOORE -- was born in Noble county, Ohio and came to this county in 1862. His parents, Emanuel and Rachael (Kirkbride) Moore, came to Lawrence county the same year. Lemuel was a soldier in the war of 1861; he enlisted July 1, 1863, in Company K, 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry; he served to the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged, and returned home. He was married in Lawrence county, March 29, 1866, to Martha Fields, who is a native of this county. Her parents, Crabtree and Belinda (Belcher) Fields, came to this county in 1805. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Moore are Calvin T., born January 30, 1867; Hugh C., May 25, 1871; Eda M., February 17, 1875; Rosetta, July 7, 1877; Roxy D., August 6, 1880. Mr. Moore is by occupation a carpenter, and makes all kinds of cabinet -work, coffins, etc., and is a resident of Lawrence township. Address, Rock Camp, Lawrence county, Ohio. ANDREW MORRISON – came to this county when a mere child, with his parents, from Greenbrier county, Virginia, where he was born. The year of their arrival was 1820. His father, Richard Morrison, was a farmer by occupation, and he raised his sons as tillers of the soil, which Andrew has always followed. Schools were very scarce, being supported by subscription, subsequently his education was rather limited. Getaway was the locality in which Mr. Morrison settled. Andrew was married to Elizabeth Brammer in this township, March 6, 1850. Their children are: Rebecca, born April, 1852, died the same year; Roxy, December, 1854, died in 1858; James R., April 20, 1855, resides in Union township, Lawrence county; William T., July 1, 1857, resides in Louisiana. Mrs. Morrison died in April, 1879. She was a life-long member of the Symmes’ Creek Baptist church. Her parents were James and Sarah (Simmons) Brammer, both of whom are deceased. Mr. Morrison’s parents were Richard and Mary (Brindle) Morrison, both deceased. The date of Mr. Morrison’s birth was July 29, 1820. His postoffice address is Russel’s Place. Lawrence county, Ohio. LORENZO D. MORRISON – is a person thought considerably of in his county, as is shown by the number of times he has been elected to serve their interests. He was a county commissioner of Lawrence county in 1871. He was treasurer of Rome township for twelve consecutive years; was also trustee of Rome township for several years. His parents, Richard and Mary Morrison were born in Greenbrier county, West Virginia, and were married in that county, March 14, 1814. They emigrated to Union township, this county, where they resided the most of their lives, the mother dying there. His father then came to this township, where he spent the remainder of his days. Lorenzo was born in West Virginia, January 19, 1819. He conducted a general merchandise business in Bradricksville from 1848 to 1854, when he went farming a few years, returning to a business life in Rome township in 1857, continuing till 1860, when he sold his business and returned to his farm, where he is still to be found. He has in his own name 150 acres, mostly all good farm land; he has about thirty acres in fruit. The Rome Beauty apple originated in the yard now owned by Mr. Morrison. The original tree blew down, and was cut up by him. Mr. Morrison was married to Margaret J. Crawford in Greenup county, Kentucky, March 7, 1850. She was born in Fayette township, this county, March 10, 1832. Her parents were John Crawford, born in 1800, and Mary (Suiter) Crawford, born in 1812, died July, 1867. The father was born in Ireland, and the mother in this county. They were married in 1831. Mr. Morrison’s father was born June 1, 1796, and died in 1871. His mother was born on November 1, 1793, and died June 19, 1853. The year of their settlement in this county was 1823. The children of Lorenzo Morrison are: Mary V., born January, 1852, died February, 1852; Alexander D., May, 1854, resides at home; Ida May (Feurt), April, 1859, resides in Proctorville; Edgar D., October, 1869, resides at home. Mr. Morrison’s postoffice address is Proctorville, Lawrence county, Ohio. JOHN MURNAHAN – was born in Windsor township, this county, October 1, 1820, his parents being Edward and Mary (Clark) Murnahan. He was married in Mason township to Mary A. King, June 24, 1838. She is a native of Nicholas county, Virginia, born December 1, 1820. She is the daughter of Alexander and Nancy (Payne) King. The following children have been born to them: Elizabeth J., born July 3, 1840, resides in Windsor township; Nancy, April 4, 1842, resides in Rome township; Sarah A., June 16, 1844, resides in Lincoln county, Virginia; John H., September 26, 1846, resides in Mason township; Mary S., January 24, 1850, resides in Douglass county, Illinois; Missouri, August 1, 1853, resides in Lincoln county, Virginia; America, September 19, 1856, resides in Rome; Sephronia, December 28, 1858, died May 6, 1881; George, January 1, 1862, resides in Mason township. All the children are married with one exception. Elizabeth is married to John P. Kingrey; Nancy to Samuel Null; Sarah to William S. Sargeant; John H. to Matilda Sharp; Mary S. to Joseph M. Depriest; Missouri to B. C. Sargeant; America to Wilson Lewis. Mr. Murnahan is a resident of Mason township, and he is engaged in farming. Address Suiter, Lawrence county, Ohio. |
