1843 Washington City Directory, L-Z
Transcriber's Notes:
- The 1843 Washington City Directory included names and occupations of those residing or working in Washington City. While Georgetown residents were generally excluded, they were listed if they worked in the City of Washington. Women were included only if they were engaged in a business or head of household. The directory also included businesses, organizations, and public places.
- Some parts of this directory were heavily foxed making them unreadable. Those portions are marked with "[?]."
- Occupations: a list of some of the more obscure occupations appearing in this directory is on the notes page.
- Editor's Notes: The directory editor made commentary notes on seven issues of importance to Washington society. They cover why the address of the "White House" was not referenced in early historical papers; the Lunatic Asylum; the Post Office, Treasury, and War Department buildings; the "northern liberties"; and how and when the Tiber Creek got its name. Those additional notes are also included on the notes page.
- Abbreviations: The editor used a system of contraction to indicate place of business or residence. F Street north is expressed by Fn; 12th street west, by 12w. The side of the street is sometimes indicated by the appropriate compass indicator
- "s side An" indicates the south side of A street in one of the northern quadrants. Other abbreviations include:
av: avenue
btw: between
cen: center (of the street)
clk: clerk
cor: corner (of the street)
nr: near or nearer [to]
sq: square
st: street
- Clarifications:
- The "of" Phrase: The editor on occasion found it necessary to include the name of a resident's father. That is indicated by the phrase "of [name]" following the resident's name." For example, an entry reading "Smith, John, of Charles" indicates that John was the son of Charles.
- Street vs. Avenue: Both "Missouri avenue" and "Missouri street" appear throughout the directory. It is unknown if "street" was a misprint for "avenue." The same is true for "Maine street."
- "Executive Way": A proposed name for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that never materialized. See the Editor's Note 1 at the end.
