Minot, N.D. Feb, 2003
I was asked by Lila to write a history of the
John Pollert family.
In doing so, I am indebted to Mildred Roberts and
her articles printed in the McLean County Heritage book that I borrowed from Ken
Hopkins, and the memories of my sister Selma and myself. I am only doing 4
generations-if I try and cover the 5th generation, I'll get all mixed up.
In the beginning-we start in Germany:
Casper Henry Pollert was born in
Atdindorf, Germany. Dec. 14, 1820.
Johanna Lahni was born in Hanover,
Germany, Feb. 14, 1830.
Both immigrated to the United States, and were
married in Jackson County, Indiana, Nov. 17, 1853. They became the parents of
eight children.
A son, John Lewis Pollert, was born in Jackson County,
Indiana, Dec. 6, 1860. He married Anna Tuelker around 1887. They became the
parents of six children. Five sons: Clarence, Andolph, Fred, Phillip and Albert,
and the daughter, (my Mother) Johanna, Marie, Lucinda, Anna.
In May 1913,
John Pollert, a widower, moved with four of his sons and his daughter, by train,
to Ryder, N.D. They were picked up and taken by wagon to a farm south of Ryder,
and close to the old Roseglen area. They had no idea of where they were going,
as there were only trails across the fields.
John and his sons, Andolph,
Fred, Phillip, Albert and daughter moved into a two room house close to the old
Roseglen store.
He bought a team, wagon, and a cow from John Snippen, and
borrowed their cook car stove. In Oct. of 1913, they moved to a farm across the
road from the John Haugen farm and bought beds. That summer, they had a big
garden and raised chickens. He worked for various farmers in that area.
The east line of the Fort Berthold Reservation was moved farther west in 1916,
and John Pollert drew number seven, which meant he was the seventh new
homesteader allowed to pick and file on a quarter of land. He did file, and
moved to a quarter south west of Parshall. He built a 14' x 16' house there.
Things did not go well on the reservation, and he moved back to the Roseglen
area. He passed away Dec. 8, 1924. He is buried in the Roseglen cemetery.
It must have been a big change for the Pollert family to leave the heavy,
black soil of the land along the Muscatatuck River in south central Indiana, and
move to North Dakota-however, many of his family remained in the
Ryder-Roseglen-Douglas area for many years after their father's death.
The oldest son, Clarence H. Pollert, did not move to N.D. with the rest of the
family. Clarence was born at Brownstone, Jackson County, Ind. on March 27, 1888.
He married Dona Brown Sept. 17, 1911, and with his wife and son, Marshall, who
was six weeks old, moved to North Dakota in July, 1913.
He worked for
farmers and farmed south of Ryder. Find later moved to the Douglas area-first by
Nelson Lake and later in town. He operated heavy equipment for several years.
They moved to Minot, where he worked for Don Moe Dodge. Clarence and Dona had
seven children-Marshall, Mildred, Orin, Lawrence and Bruce. One son passed away
in infancy.
Clarence Pollert passed away July 25, 1971. His wife passed
away Oct. 20, 1978. Both are buried in the Douglas cemetery.
Marshall was
born June 1, 1913. He married Marian McKay. They had six children. They lived on
a farm east of Douglas. Marshall later moved to Douglas where he passed away on
Jan. 28, 1987.
Mildred was born May 20, 1917 on the farm south of Ryder.
She did house work for several families, and at one time, did so in California.
She returned to N.D. and worked in the Douglas Post Office.
Mildred
married Joyce Roberts Jan. 2, 1944. They farmed and ranched southwest of Douglas
until moving to Minot in 1984, her husband passed away March 14, 1993. Mildred
continues to live in a condo in Minot.

served in the army and worked for several farmers in the Douglas area. He was
married to Lita Bevers. They had one daughter. His life is unknown.

was born Nov. 16, 1927. He served many years in the United States Navy. He
married Joyce House. They were the parents of eight children. After he left the
navy, he worked on a boat out of New Orleans. He spent two years in Brazil, and
returned to N.D. in ill health. He passed away in the V.A. hospital in Fargo, on
March 27, 1989.
Lawrence was born Oct.3, 1929. He also served in the
army. He married Annabelle Kolden. He had two daughters. They lived in Bismarck.
Lawrence worked as a barber as well as a teacher. He barbered in several towns
on weekends. Lawrence passed away from cancer on Aug. 15, 1982.

born March 20, 1933. He also served in the army. He was a teacher, and married
one of his students, Ardell Rogers. They had three children. He quit teaching
and worked for the Pfizer drug firm. He is on disability leave and lives in the
Chicago area.
All of the deceased members of the Clarence Pollert family
are buried in the Douglas cemetery.

Conclusion:
March 8, 2003.
This history of the first four generations of the John
Pollert family, consisting of thirty-two individuals. Nineteen men and thirteen
women.
I have attempted to be fairly accurate in some small part of each
member's life. I believe all of the dates used are correct.
I could not
have done this without the help of Lila Lebahn and Mildred Roberts. I thank my
sister for typing, and my good wife, Frances, for all the patience and editing.
It would be interesting to have someone in the fifth generation do a similar
work. Your comments are solicited.
