Mrs. Steffen Aldahl, 41, and Jean Leona Haugen, 11, both of Des
Lacs, were drowned in the Great Northern reservoir there late Saturday. Mrs.
Aldahl had ventured out into deep water in an attempt to rescue the Haugen girl.
Mrs. Aldahl's own daughter, June, also 11, who tried to save her mother, was
rescued from the water by Ken Kinyon, of Des Lacs, who on account of the depth
of the reservoir was unable to bring up the bodies of Mrs. Aldahl and Jean.
The bodies were beneath the surface about an hour and a half before they
were recovered with the help of divers from Minot, using fence wire for a
dredge.
Mrs. Aldahl had gone with June and with
several other girls to the reservoir to wade and swim. They entered the water
near the dam. As they bathed near the water's edge, the Haugen girl went beyond
her depth and called for help. Mrs. Aldahl plunged after her, succeeded in
bringing her to the surface once, but herself was submerged.
When Kinyon
arrived, called by others in the party, he brot to safety June, who had tried
unsuccessfully to save her mother. He saw Mrs. Aldahl's hat floating on the
water, but she and Jean had disappeared.
Fire Chief J. J. O'Leary and
Fred Riebe, life guard at Roosevelt swimming pool, were the Minoters who
answered the call. After assisting in the recovery of the two, they tried for
more than an hour to resuscitate them.
The depth of the water where the
two were drowned is about 15 feet. The reservoir is still deeper in places.
Among others in the party were Fay, Joyce, and Gloria Haugen, Jean's
sisters.
Both bodies today are at the Bowan funeral parlors in Minot,
brot there from F. B. Becker's at Des Lacs.
The Haugen girl's funeral
will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Des Lacs, with the
Rev. C. A. Kepler, of Lansford formerly at Des Lacs, officiating.
Rites for Mrs. Aldahl will be held at Des Lacs later in
the week.
Proposed plans for a double funeral at Des Lacs, discussed
Sunday, were dropped today when it was learned that a married daughter of Mrs.
Aldahl is coming here from California to attend her mother's rites.
It
appears probable that the body of Mrs. Aldahl will be buried at Des Lacs. The
Haugen girl's body will be brot to Rosehill cemetery in Minot.
Jean was a
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haugen, of Des Lacs. She is survived by her
parents and nine brothers and sisters, as well as other relatives. The brothers
and sisters are: Harold Jr., Fay, Joyce, Gloria, Robert, Anna and Ida, who are
twins, Helen, and Bonnie.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Groninger, 525 Valley
street in Minot, are maternal grandparents of the Haugen girl.
Survivors
of Mrs. Aldahl include her husband, who is a blacksmith at Des Lacs, and several
sons and daughters. Cleve and Selmer Aldahl of Minot, are sons of the woman.
June and Mable are daughters residing at Des Lacs, and the married daughter from
California is Mrs. Gelma Stockton.
