A few days since Mrs. W. W. Gardner received word that her son, Don,
was seriously ill in a hospital at Minot, N. D. Monday a telegram said
he was much improved, and that there were good hopes for his recovery,
but Tuesday a third message conveyed the sad intelligence that he had
passed away Monday night. Mr. Gardner was taken sick last winter and
underwent two operations at Bismarck, one for hernia and another for
appendicitis. He became better and it was thought he would recover
permanently, but about a month ago he suffered another attack and was
taken to Minot where about a month previous to his death he underwent
still another operation, this time for the removal of an abscess on the
kidneys. He seemed to be recovering nicely until two weeks ago, when he
was seized with a violent attack of hiccoughing, that could not be
checked and which continued for twelve days before the affliction was
brought under control. It was then that word was sent that he was
better, but his constitution was so weakened that the apparent
betterment was but temporary.
Don Garfield Gardner was born at
West Union, Iowa, October 3, 1878, and came with his parents to Lyon
county when a small child. He lived here until about ten years ago, when
he moved to Hancock, Minn., where he farmed for two years, and then
moved to Makoti, N. D. where he took up a homestead, and where he's
since lived. He was married to Miss Myrtie Rosborough, of this city,
fifteen years ago, and is survived by the wife and two children, his
mother, his sister Kitty Gardner and brother, Dan.
Mr. Gardner
was an industrious, able young man, who had a friend in everyone with
whom he was acquainted or came in contact, and his demise will be
sincerely mourned by all his acquaintances.
The remains will be
brought to the home of his mother and interment will take place in
Riverview cemetery, beside his father and other members of the family.

This section of Ward county was shocked at the news of the death of
Don Gardner, prominent farmer of near Makoti, at the Minot hospital
Monday night at 10 o'clock. He was taken suddenly ill on Aug. 12th and
was hurried to Minot and immediately operated on. For several days his
life was despaired of but later reports were to the effect that he was
improving, and on the strength of these reports his friends expected to
see him about again soon. But that was not to be. The hand of death was
on him and he passed into the Great Beyond when hope was running highest
for his recovery.
Don Gardner was one of the earliest settlers in
this part of the county and grew up with the country, so to speak, in
its development. His friends were as many as his acquaintance, and his
passing has occasioned a deep sense of sorrow to all. At the hour of
going to press the News has not been able to secure information as to
the funeral arrangements. The bereaved wife and family have the sympathy
of the entire community.
