Services Held for Ex-Tulsan

Maurine Howard Abernathy, retired attorney and former Tulsan, died last Thursday in Washington, D.C. She was 83.
Services were held Tuesday in Washington.
Born in Pecan Gap, Texas, Abernathy graduated from Central College in Lexington, Mo. In 1938, she received a law degree from the University of Tulsa, where she was a member of Phi Delta Delta legal fraternity.
After working as a secretary for Gulf and Mid-Continent oil companies in Tulsa, Abernathy moved to Washington, D.C., in 1943 to work for a public relations firm.
In 1950, she passed the bar exam and worked in private law practice for about 40 years.
Abernathy served in several offices in the Oklahoma State Society in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Potomac Chapter of International Toastmistress Club.
She also served as president of the National Association of Women Lawyers and of the D.C. Business and Professional Women's Club. She was an officer and trustee of the D.C. Women's Bar Association, associate editor of Women Lawyers' Journal, editor of Phi Delta Delta national legal magazine, general counsel and member of Beta Sigma Omicron Society and member of Professional Panhellenic Association.
Survivors include a brother, Chauncy C. Howard, of Venice, Fla.; and a niece, Faye Abernathy, of Richmond, Va.
